CRICKET.

UNITED t. MIDLAND

This match was concluded on Saturday last, and resulted in fayor of the United by 55 runs, with Bix wickets down for 97. Secretan (34) not out from the previous Saturday, was accompanied to the wickets by Beeves, who unfortunately had received a nasty knock in the eye with the cricket ball while practising. Nevertheless he played a good innings, and for some time resisted the efforts of the bowlers, who were well on. Secretan did not remain long, only adding two singles and a 4 for a grand on-drive, before he was bowled by Fuller with a "break back" which kept close to the ground. Sheath joined Reeves and commenced to play steadily. After 15 runs had been added to the total of the last wicket, Reeves returned the ball to Fuller, who easily held it. Wilson was unfortunately run out after scoring 5. Frith filled the vacancy, and quickly ran up his total of 10 before ho was bowled by Turner with a good ball, Sheath being not out for a well played inning of 19. The total at the fall of the last wicket being 152, thus leaving the Midland 128 to get to win. J. Fowler and Watson appeared to open the attack, but fortune did not shine upon their efforts. Wicket after wicket fell in quick succession, five being down for ten runs. The sixth fell for 23, of which Beard claimed 11, a good catch at equare-leg by Cotterill causing him to retire. Douglaß, who played very steadily, was at last caught at short-leg for 10, which included a fine drive for 5—7 for 39. Mac Donnell and Cohen raised the total to 58, when the former was bowled by Ashby with a shooter. His 15 was mado up by a 4, two 3's, two 2's. Morice quickly put together his 11, when he was bowled by Ashby—9 for 71. Fuller failed to score, and Cohen carried out hiß bat for a patient innings of 13. His defence is good, but he lacks hitting power. The innings thus fell short of the required number by 56 runs. The bowling of Ashby and Frith was weU on and required playiog steadily.
