THE LYTTELTON REGATTA.

To the liditfir of the Globe.

Sib, —Will you kindly allow me space for a few remarks in reference to the above, as I was a competitor in the Model Yacht race at the late regatta, and having, as I consider, fairly won third prize. A protest was entered on the grounds that I did not go round the buoy, which I have witnesses to prove I did. Now I should imagine it was the duty of the committor, through the secretary, to send me a written notice within a reasonable time that a protest was entered against me, which notice I did not receive until the 21st January, informing me that the prize would be paid to tho protestor on the following Saturday unless I could show cause to the contrary. This only allowed me two cloar days to prove. The first intimation I had of a protest being entered was when I went to Lyttelton to bring out my boat, fivo days after the regatta. Prom that date I had been daily expecting a communication, as I did not think the protest would be entertained. Now I can stand a fair beating with a good grace better than many people, but I do not like to be " jumped on," as the saying is. For instance in 1866, we, as Day Brothers, sailed the Red Jacket, in the open boat race, against a boat called the Scud : we fouled her on our port tack, bo of course we lost the prize. I believe it was in 1868 that the same two boats fouled in exactly the same mannov, the Seud then being oh tho port tack, and again we loot the prize, but for what reason is a mystery to me. In my opinion we could not have a better harbour for sailing with a N.E. wind, for small yachts, than Lyttelton, but if competitions are not encouraged the yacht race will be a farce, as it was at last regatta. Yours, &c, A. J. DAY. Sumner, February 7th, 1880.
