MAYORAL BANQUET AT ASHBURTON.
Mr Thomas Bullock gave a banquet at the Somerset Hotel, on Wednesday night, on the occasion of his concluding his labors as Mayor of Ashburton. Those invited were the Councillors, ex-Councillors, Council officers, and representative] of the papers. A very excellent and well-served dinner was, as usual, furnished by Mr Shearman, and it is needless to say was much enjoyed. Mr Hugo Friedlander, the present Mayor, occupied the vice-chair. After a number of formal toasts, Mr Williamson asked all present to drink a lumper to Mr Bullock, the retiring Mayor. His speech was very eulogistic, and he concluded by saying that during his term of office Mr Bullock had woo the friendship of the Council and the esteem of the ratepayers. They all knew how much Mr Bullock: had aided in making their town what it was, and nothing he could say would heighten their respect and esteem for that gentleman. [Loud applause.] Mr Bullock, in replying, reviewed the early history of Ashburton, noting its growth in importance. The times had bees very hard, but the prospect of a good harvest had already made them look better, and he was certain Ashburton had a bright future in store. " The New Mayor, Mr Hugo Friedlander," "The Agricultural and Commercial Interests," "The Council Staff," "The Borough Solicitor," "The Ladies," and "The Press," were also drunk, and after a very happy evening, the guests dispersed.
