YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN. ASSOCIATION.
A tea and public meeting in connection with the Young Women’s Christian Association was held in St. John's schoolroom last evening. Tea was laid at half-past six o’clock, and a large number sat down to the tables, which were plentifully supplied, with refreshments. After tea, the public meetingwas held, Mr Twentyman occupying the chair, supported on the platform by several clergymen and others. The report of theassociation was read by Mr Jameson, who showed the progress made so far to have been good, with excellent prospects for the future. The Rev. Mr Elmslie then addressed the meeting, and gave a graphic sketch of the origin and progress of the institution known as the Young Women’s Christian Association and Institute Union, which now had branches in almost every part of the civilised world. 1 He then referred to the principles upon which the coffee rooms were to be established, showing their uses in the way of supplying a place of resort for refreshments at mid-day and other hours, with papers, magazines, etc., for recreation daring leisure time. Hoconcluded by expressing a fervent hope for the continued progress and prosperity of the newly formed institution. The Rev. Mr Watson followed with a congratulatory address, and other speakers addressed the mooting. During the evening the choir gave soma selections to harmonium accompanimentsThe proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
