HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The usual monthly meeting of the committm of the above was held at the Commercial Hotel on Tuesday last, Mr A. Duncan presiding. The consideration of the report of the judges at the late spring show with regard to the admission of the public, and to the staging of pot plants for effect, was deferred until a future meeting. A resolution was passed requesting the president of the society, Mr E. O. J. Stevens, M.H.R., to lay before the House the fact that the art-unions got up in connection with the society had an equal claim for exemption from the operation of the proposed Lotteries Act as art unions of works of art, paintings, Ac. The President was also requested to point out that the suppression of the art unions in connection with the society would have a very prejudicial effect upon its usefulness. A resolution was carried expressing regret that Mr Crooks’ exhibit of a hand bouquet at the late show had been accidentally overlooked by the judges. The next rose show was decided to be held in the Congregational schoolroom, and Messrs T. H. Potts, A. Duncan, and H. Bunting were appointed as judges, and Messrs Dutton and Allan stewards on the occasion. It was decided to deposit another sum of £IOO in the Mutual Benefit Building Society. The meeting then adjourned.
