CHURCH SOIREE.

The annual soiree of St John’s Presbyterian Church, Lyttelton, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday night, and in point of success was not behind any of its predecessors. The hall was crowded during the evening, and between 300 and 400 guests took tea. The following ladies had charge of the tables or otherwise helped in providing the soiree : Mesdames Bain, Brown, Buchanan, Campbell, Clark, Cunningham, Duncan, Featherston, Fergusson, Fox, Gennaway, Grange, Gemmel), Grubb, J. Grubb, Hamilton, Healy, Hunter, Leslie, Macpherson, A. Macdonald, McClatchie, J. Mackay, G. Mackay, Malcolmson, McLellan, Maclean, M. Millar, Millar, Murray, Ross, Sproule, Yule; Misies Hill, Huie, Irvine, Pitcaithly, Stout, Sinclairs (2). After tea the pastor, the Rev. James Hill, • took the chair, and after reviewing the work of the Church during the year, and congratulating the congregation upon the result, ho expressed the very great pleasure he felt at seeing so many present who belonged to other Churches, and thanked them for the kindly feeling that existed between the other congregations and the Presbyterians of Lyttelton. The evening was then pleasantly passed by the audience in listening to the following performances, each of the performers coming in for a share of applause : Pianoforte selections, by Mrs Crowley, the Misses Kenner and the Misses Malcolmsen, songs by Mesdames Millar, Rich, and Macpherson, Miss Kissell, and Messrs Crawford, S. Johnson, H. Johnson, and W. B. Allwright, a vocal duet by Miss Stout and Mrs Millar, and a reading by Mr Yule. The Revs. C. Fraser, Burnett, and McCallum, each gave a short address, and after the various votes of thanks had been passed, the audience dispersed.
