RAKAIA MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
A charge of sly grog selling was heard by Mr Guinness on the previous Court day, when the names of two individuals were inserted in the information laid by the police. The charge against William Morton for selling rum to Russell was not then sustained, although that for selling to George Wheeler was. His Worship therefore on that occasion gave defendant the benefit of the fact that the charge as laid was not proved. A farther information against William Morton for selling three half-gills of alcoholic liquor to George Wheeler on the 21st of September was heard on October 30th. Mr Wm. Purnell appeared for defendant. Serjeant Pratt conducted the prosecution. Edwin Russell, who went to Morton’s with Wheeler on the above date, was examined at some length, aa also was Wheeler. The witnesses appeared to give their evidence far more freely than on the previous occasion. His Worship jreserved judgment till he had considered the objection raised by Mr Purnell, that a man cannot be tried twice for the same offence. A case against Mr Wm. Saunders for a breach of the Rakaia bridge regulations was postponed till next Court day.
