SWIMMING.
The swimming matches (says the New York correspondent of the “ San Francisco Call”), of which we have had several lately, have been fiascos. In one, Captain Webb, the English champion, was accused of leaving the water, and running half a mile along the beach. This was a manifestly absurd charge, as he would have been compelled to swim at least twice the distance to accomplish the feat—a feat which in itself would be no light one, as any one who has ever tried to run or take violent exercise after a long and exhausting spell in the water will readily vouch. A more recent swimming contest at Bath, L. 1., evoked more interest, though it, too, was a fiasco. Here, again, Webb was accused of “selling” the race, and ho certainly failed to show a performance at all worthy of the fame he has acquired, Daly, the California champion, who at one time was showing well to the front, was compelled to abandon the contest through an accident, and the honours were eventually carried off by a young Brooklynite named Schoening.
