THE CHRISTCHURCH ELECTION DECISION.
The " New Zealand Times," of Monday, eaye:—" The decision of the Parliamentary committee on the Ohristchurch election petition trill prove that the particular vanity which seeks its gratification in being returned for more than one constituency at a general election, cannot be indulged without some peouniary sacrifice on the part of the chosen one, or without the penalty of a temporary disfranchisement of one or other of the places operated on. If we remember rightly, Dr. Turnbutl, the stump-deputy of the Liberator of Canterbury, publicly announced that Sir George Grey's share of the late election expenses amounted to more than £IOOO, and that the man of tbe people thought the sacrifice a small one in the great cause of liberty, and of his own glorification. The little bills have been since presented, and as the greater portion of them are said to be still—like the liberal measures of the late Government—- " under consideration," the appeal from Philip drunk to Philip sober may not be answered quite satisfactorily to the Ohristohurch Liberal Association. The colony owes a debt of gratitude to the Hon. Mr Richardson for having, by his courage and persistence, evoked a formal decision on the Parliamentary law of the caso, a decision which will hereafter serve as a precedent, and we hope, also, as a warning. Christchurch has now, in one of its best men, a more fitting representative than Sir George Grey ; and if Dr. Turnbull and his friends find it necessary, in furtherance of the great cause of human freedom, to put their hands yet a little deeper into their own pockets, they will have learned the lesson in political psychology that " in not giving benefactions and in not making loans without large interest, great' Liberals ' often show unquestionable firmness."
