SPORTS COMMITTEE.

The sports committee held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, in the City Council chamber, the Mayor in the chair. Messrs Smith, Lewin, Xing, Hulbert, and F. Hobbs were appointed members of the committee. Mr Walkden reported that the grand stand could not be altered as suggested, but it could be re'erected with the same materials. A letter was read from the Rev. C. Eraser, depreoating the sale of intoxicating liquors upon the ground on the day of the sports. After a few remarks on the tenor of the letter, for the most part of a dissentient nature, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hebden, seconded by Mr Mitchell—" That the letter be allowed to lie on the table." It was resolved to erect the grand stand as hitherto, the position to be left to the ground committee. The next business was the election of officers, with the following result:—President—the Mayor of Christchuroh; vicepresident, Mr John Ollivier; treasurer —Mr H. E. Alport j judges—Messrs Ollivier, Mitchell, Pratt, and Bishop | referees— Moesrs Wachsmann and Lewin; starters — Messrs Hebden and Hulbert; clerks of the oourse—Messrs Wachsmann and King ; handicappers—Messrs Wachsmann and Lewin ; stewards of the grand stand—Mr W. H. Smith and members of the committee; timekeepers—Messrs Frank . Hobbs and Wachsmann j telegraphist—Mr Murray; secretary for entries—Mr F. 0. Hall; hon. secretary— Mr F. T. Haskins. The following were nominated as additional members of the committee—Meiers Lambert, Hobday, A. Kirk, C. B. Taylor, Gapes, and Ruddenklau. The following were elected as a programme committee:—Messrs Wachsmann, Lewin, Hulbert, Hebden, Pratt, and W. H. Smith.
