CHRISTCHTURCH HEALTH RETURNS.

The following is the half yearly report of the medical officer to the Local Board of Health for Christchurch district:— Christchurch, October Ist, 1879. Sir, —I have the honor to report for your information on the health of the Christchurch drainage district for the half year commencing April Ist, and ending September 30tb, 1879. _The following are the numbers of householders who reported the existence of contagions diseases during the six months Typhoid, 51; diphtheria, 21; scarlatina, 5 ; measles, 1. The cases have been thus described —

The number of cases reported for the corresponding six months was 98, namely, typhoid 38, diphtheria 15, scarlatina 45 ; and the mortality within the city for the five months of this period, ending August 31st, 1878, was T 37 per 1000 monthly; for the five months ending August 31st, 1879,1-73. ~ , It will be seen from tbe above tables tbat while scarlatina cases have decreased from 45 to 5, typhoid and diphtheria have increased from 38 to 51, and 15 to 21 respectively ; and it will also be seen that in the suburbs typhoid is more prevalent than in the city, the being-, as your medical officer has frequently pointed ont, the want of closet pan accommodation and the continuance of cesspits.
