ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the meeting of this Council on Monday night a great deal of purely local business was transacted. A telegram was read from the member for Coleridge, Mr E, G. Wright, stating that the unemployed could find work on the railway extension at Albury or Weka Pass. The Mayor said he hoped the Mount Somers line would be pushed on, and after discussion the following resolution was carried—“ That this Council regret that the County Council did not see the urgent necessity thot exists for pressing on the Government the placing of a length of the Ashburton and Mount Somers Railway at the disposal of the unemployed in this district, which would have kept the men in the district till harvest, and at the same time would have been pushing on the remaining portion of this railway, which can be of little service till finished to Mount Somers, and that the removal of these men is a great loss to the county, and that a committee consisting of the Mayor, and Ore. Saunders, Friedlander, and Williamson be appointed to draw up a letter to be forwarded with this resolution to the member for the district and Minister of Public Works.” The following resolution was also carried-—” That in the opinion of this Council it is advisable to form an association composed of all the boroughs in the Canterbury Provincial District, with a view to furthering the interests of municipalities in general, and that copies of this resolution be sent to the various boroughs, and that a meeting of delegates be held in Christchurch at a date to be fixed by this Council.” In support of the resolution reference was made to the difficulty of borrowing small sums, whereas if all the municipalities combined the money needed could be raised in one large loan in London, A wise discretion could also be exercised by the combination to check any unnecessary borrowing by any of the Councils.
