THE MEMBER FOR RIVERTON.
The “ Western Star” of Saturday says : Owing to the rumors current that MrM'Caughan was not carrying out the pledges he gave at the time of his candidature with respect to supporting the Ministry, a meeting of his committee was held here yesterday afternoon, when it was carried unanimously that a copy of the following resolution, proposed by Mr Horr, seconded by Mr J. MTntosh, be forwarded to him : —“ Your committee, seeing that you are in opposition to the present Government, wish to know if you will keep your promise, and support no Ministry unless Mr Macandrew is a member of it.” The secretary received the following reply " Wellington, October 3rd, 1879. To Jas. Taylor, Riverton.—lnform meeting that to keep Macandrew it is just what I am doing. The House is sick of Sir George Grey and other Ministers, and Macandrew’s friends wish to get him with a better team and stronger Government within a short time. Trust me, and will see all right.— M'Oaitghan.” We are authorised to state that the chairman (Mr T. Daniel) and committee approve of the action Mr M'Caughan is taking.
