DEATH OF MR. T. M. HASSAL.
Our obituary of yesterday announced the death of this highly respected gentleman, a member of the firm of Miles, Hassal and Co., whose decease will be widely regretted. The immediate cause of his death was rheumatic fever. It is nearly twenty.threo years since Mr Hassal arrived in Canterbury from Australia, and during the whole of that time he has been largely connected with the trade and settlement of the country, and has always taken a lively interest in all matters connected with the progress of the colony. He was at the time of his death Imperial German Consul for Canterbury. He was a member of the Church of England Synod, one of the Church Property Trustees, and lay-reader in the Church. He was a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Hassal took an active part in the promotion of several local and colonial companies, which are now successful undertakings, and his death leaves a vacancy in the directorate of the Union Insurance Company.
