YESTERDAY’S ELECTIONS.
EETUEN OF ME BOWEN,
The polling for the return of one member for the Kaiapoi district resulted yesterday in the re-election of Mr C. C. Bowen by a largo majority. Great interest was taken in the proceedings, and the supporters of Mr Bowen and Mr Wearing were equally confident ot success. No effort was spared by either party to bring up the voters to the respective booths. There was the usual round of good humored election chaff, and a few squibs. Among the latter was rather a funny one by an old campaigner, who indulged in sly chaff at several notable persons, and gave a probable result of the poll. At Kaiapoi two well drawn cartoons were displayed on Mr Oram’s malthonse, and in Eangiora there was a cartoon of the Waimakariri dredge drifting with a local commander on to the rocks which Mr Bowen was represented as warning them not to approach. There was a period of intense excitement at both the principal polling places for about forty minutes after the poll clo od, during which time at Kaiapoi the candidate! and others came in for free grants ot flour. Our agent was the first to collect together the returns, and the result was soon published. Great interest was taken in Christchurch as to the result. About forty voters from town, in Mr Bowen’s interest, had been taken to Kaiapoi by special train at midday to vote. At 5.30, Mr C. Whitefoord, the Eeturning Officer, announced that the poll appeared to stand :
Majority for Mr Bowen, 81. The official declaration would, however, not be made till noon on Monday. The announcement was received with cheers for both gentlemen. Mr Bowen thanked the electors from the Pier Hotel verandah, and Mr Wearing from tho balcony of the Kaiapoi Hotel. The proceedings all through wore most orderly and quiet. [By Tblegeaph.] AUCKLAND, September 5. The Eden election caused great excitement to day. The result was as follows: — Tola 413 Whitaker 309 Mr A. MacDonald (Greyite) beat Captain Morris and Mr Johnston for the East Coast. The returns as far as received are:— MacDonald 303 Morris ... ... ... ... 273 Johnston ... 87 The returns still to he received cannot affect the result.
NEW PLYMOUTH, September 5. . The result of the election for Egmont is as , follows: Atkinson ... 322 Sherwood 118 There bas been but little excitement at this end of the district. WANGANUI, September 5. There was a most energetic and exciting contest over to-day’s election. The result, so far as known, is Bryce 536 Ballance 523 Fox 473 One return has yet to come in, which will not affect the results. MASTERTON, September 5. The Mauriceville returns are : Bcetham 67 Bunny 51 Pharazyn 18 The election of Messrs Bcetham and Bunny is assured. WELLINGTON, September 5. To-day’s was a very exciting election, and was conducted with the greatest energy on the part of all the candidates. Everyone agreed that Mr Levin would head the poll, but opinion was divided as to who would be second. The result, subject to revision as to cases of personation alleged, was: — Levin 1191 Hutchison ... 804 Hunter 813 Gmnfield 4i5 One foreigner’s vote was challenged, on the ground that ho was not naturalized. There was a good deal of good humored disorder at the close, and the crowd was immense. Mr Hutchison’s friends carried him on their should! rs. HOKITIKA, September 5. The returns at present to hard from the principal polling places combined are : Reid 841 Seddon ... 741 Dungan ... 518 Barif 369 Cuming 88 All the candidates excepting Mr Barff, the late member, stood in the Greyito interest. The total returns will not ho in till to-morrow, but no material alteration can be made. Messrs Reid and Seddon are thetefore elected. OAMARU, September 5. The excitement in town to-day over the Waitaki election was the greatest ever known in Oamaru. DUNEDIN, September 5, The result of the polling for Roslyn is : Driver ... 553 Barr 344 Hogg 11 PORT CHALMERS, September 5. The election to-day resulted in tie return of Mr Macandrew by a majority of 96 over Mr Green. The numbers were — Macandrew 363 Green ... 267 Every nerve was strained to bring available voters to the booth. A large number of Dunedin voters came down by train, and were met by the friends of each candidate. NOMINATIONS. AUCKLAND, Septembers. At the City East nomination the show of hands was Speight (Greyite) ... ... ... 64 Clarke (Independent) ... ... 26 NELSON, September 5.
An unexpected episode occurred at the Waimea nomination to day. It was expected that Mr Sheppard would be returned unopposed, but Messrs Curtis and Acton Adams, candidates for the city, whore the election takes place tomorrow, were proposed without their knowledge

At the nomination for the Wakatipu, Messrs H. W. Finn, W. Mason, and H. Manders were proposed and seconded. The show of hands was :■ —Mason, 13; Finn, 10; Manders, 7.
