CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB.
The annual general meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Club was held last evening, at the Commercial Hotel, there being a good attendance, Mr J. O. Jones (captain of the club) in the chair.
The minutes of the previous annual meeting having been read and confirmed, The Secretary read the o,nnual report, which showed that the membership had considerably increased. In January the committee purchased three capital shares in the Permanent Investment Association, at .£lO per share, making, with those already in possession of the club, twelve shares. The committee have purchased from Mr Campbell the section of land situated on the opposite side of the river to the sheds, for the sum of .£2OO, of which .£IOO has been paid, and the balance to remain for two years at the rate of —per cent. To effect this the twelve shares of the Permanent Investment Association, held by the club, have been disposed of at the rate of .£lO per schare. The sum of £7l 9s 6d has been paid to Mr Douglas, on account of loan and interest thereon, leaving a balance of £SO, which amount, with £2 10s interest, will bo due in January next. It will also be seen that the purchase-money of the Electric, viz., £10; and the overdraft at the Union Bank, £49 2s 7d, as per last statement, have been paid out of this season’s receipts. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a satisfactory position financially, showing the assets to be £IOO6, and the liabilities £202 10s. The Chairman, in remarking on the report, said they had never before been able to present such good results before the club, notwithstanding that previous meetings had also been considered very satisfactory. He pointed out the various items of expenditure as disclosed in the report, including the acquisition of certain property, and thought the club might well congratulate themselves on their position. Mr Trischler moved—“ That the report be adopted,” and in doing so endorsed the remarks of the chairman.
Se:onded by Mr Bell, and carried unanimously. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, resulting as follows : President, Mr E. J. S. Harman; vice-presidents, Mr A. F. N. Blahiston and G. L. Hellish; captain. Mr J. O. Jones ; deputy-captain, Mr 1,. M. Ollivier; secretary, Mr Paul ; treasurer, Mr Saltmarsh.
The committee were elected as follows : Messrs P. P. White, J. J. Collins, J. B. Evans, T. Tayler, A. B. Pavitt, E. D. Thomas, E. Snow.
Mr Jones, in accordance with notice, moved—- “ That members elected between the 31st of March and the Slat of August of each year, only pay the entrance fee.” Ho explained that the boats could not be used much during that term, and he thought that the adoption of such a rule, whilst it could not well be abuse 1, might be the means of securing eligible members. The motion was carried. Mr Jones also moved, and it was carried — “ That at any annual meeting of the club the members may elect as life members any member whom they may consider, from long membership and ser rices rendered to the club, eligible for the position ; such members to have the privileges of regular members, without paying subscriptions.” Messrs L. M. Ollivier and Thomas Tayler were elected a racing committee. Life members were elected as follows; — Messrs E. J. S. Harman, E. D. Thomas, S. S. Eevans, and A. F. N. Blakiston. Fifteen new ordinary members of the club were elected. The meeting terminated with a vote ot thanks to the chair.
