A vote of confidence, proposed by Mr Armstrong, ond seconded by Mr Cowie, was carriid unanimously. Electoral. DUNEDIN, August 29. The Dunstan nomination is on the 3rd, and the poll on the 6th Sept. There is little doubt now but that it will be a walk over for Mr Pyke, Messrs Mackollar and S. N. Brown having declined to contest the seat.

Mr Macassey's answers at the nomination yesterday, re education, when he virtually acknowledged himself a denominationist, hare, it is generally considered, hopelessly ruined his chance. There will be a keen contest for the third seat, but it is thought that Mr Dick will head the poll, Messrs Driver and Hogg, the working man's oandidate, and Mr Barr, a Greyite, have been nominated for Roslyn. Mr Driver obtained the show of hands. His election is considered a certainty. INYEROABGILL, August 29. At the nomination for Mataura to-day, Mr Shanks was returned unopposed. Sir G. A private letter from Captain UnderwoodJ who commanded the Albion and Arawata' states that the Botomahana is 1272 tons burden, is of steel, and is very strong and very light. She is splendidly fitted out and magnificently furnished, and will astonish the Wellington people. HOKITIKA, August 29. Electoral. Mr B. C. Beid addressed a crowded meeting of electors in the Town Kail last evening, when he was well received, and a vote of confidence in his candidature was carried without dissent. WESTPOBT, August 29. Electoral. Mr J. B. Fisher has been nominated on the Government ticket, and Mr J. Henry on that of the Opposition. AUCKLAND, August 28. Bewi addressed a crowded meeting of settlers at Eihikihi. He gave a history of his negotiations with Sir G. Grey from the beginning, and verified the telegrams sent to the Governor, Mr Hamlin, and other members of the House during the session. He said that he did telegraph to the Governor telling him that if the Grey Ministry were turned out, the good work which had been begun would be overturned, and they should wait till the tree bore its fruit. He said the statement that Sir G. Grey went on his hands and knees ta> the Kopua meeting was absurd, and asserted that cordial relations existed between himself and Grey for the benefit of both races. Major Jackson wanted to put questions to Bewi, asserting that his (Jackson's) loyalty had been questioned, but Bewi having declared before the meeting that he would not submit to be publicly catechised, the chairman refused to put any questions, and the andience stamped Jackson down. The Yolunteer target matches are postponed until September 12th. At the annual meeting of the Thames Gas Company, the report and balance-sheet showed that, after making provision for bad debts, there remains £935 18s 5d available for division, from which the directors recommend payment of a dividend of Is 6d per share, leaving £lB7 5s 5d to be carried forward. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 28. Hall, the runaway prisoner, was captured near Stoney river by a Maori, yesterday, and was brought before the District Court, with Hinaki, to-day. Hall was sentenced to two years' extra penal servitude, and Hinaki to six months. A fire occurred at Davidson's house, Oarrington road, by the children setting fire to the curtains. It was extinguished with little damage. WELLINGTON, August 28. Mr Searancke, late B.M. at Hamilton, has, to-day, served a writ for five thousand pounds on the proprietors of the " Hawke's Bay Herald " and " Wairoa Free Press." Mr Blackett, the Engineer-in-Chief, invites all persons desirous of obtaining employment on the Crofton section of the Wellington and Foxton railway, to apply on the ground at 8 a.m. on Monday next. W. B. Williams, an elderly man, living at Newtown, and subject to fits, yesterday evening fell down in one, while walking in his garden, and died in a few moments. The Hinemoa left to-day for Opunake, with stores and other things for the use of the constabulary. She will leave Opunake direct for Dunedin to bring back the Premier. Messrs T. M. Maztin and Kenneth Wilson, of tbe County of Selwyn, have been appointed dog registrars. TIMAKTJ, August 28. A woman named Mrs Archer had both legs ■mashed by a dray at Waimate to-day.
