FIRE BRIGADES ASSOCIATION.
It will be recollected that some time back at a meeting of the delegates from the various fire brigades it was resolved to form a Central Eire Brigade Association, which was done. Since then returns have been received from all the brigades in New Zealand, and a pamphlet has been issued showing the cost of maintenance, sources from which revenue is derived, strength, quantity of plant, &c. Prom this it appears that there are thirty-two brigades in the colony having 10 superintendents, 23 captains, 18 lieutenants, 54 foremen, and eighteen other officers, with Gl7 men. The total annual cost of theie brigades is £5667. The total number of engines is 36, of which 32 are hand and 4 steam. There are also 17 hand pumps, 45 hose reels, and 18 hook and ladder carriages. The total length of ladders in use is 1526 feet. Of hose there is a total of 9066 ft. leather, 24,304 canvas, and 2350 india-rubber. There are 36 stations, 33 of wood, aud 3 of brick, of tho total value of £12,261. The total value of plant is estimated at £15,080. It may be noted that the Christchurch Brigade stands first in order of seniority, having been established in 1860, Dunedin coming second in 1862, and Wellington Yolunteer third in 1865.
