CANTEBURY LIBERAL REFORM ASSOCIATION.
A well-attended meeting of members of the Association, called by advertisement, was hold last night at the side room of the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lichfield street. Owing to an impression on the pare of many members that the meeting was called for 7.30 instead of 7 p.m., it was not deemed advisable to open proceedings till the later hour. The President, Dr. Turnbull, was in the chair. A resume was given of the proceedings of the provisional and central committees since the last general meeting, and the action taken was generally approved. A proposition, “ That a portion of the test clause of membership bo rescinded,” •was lost, and the clause retained in its entirety. Messrs Gapes, R. L. Higgins, and E. J. Gammack were elected vice-presidents of the Association. Mr Izott proposed and Mr Webber seconded-—“ That Mr S. P. Andrews be solicited by this Association to come forward as a candidate with Sir George Grey for the representation of the city in tho House of Representatives.” In response to a general calf, Mr Andrews came forward and shortly addressed tho meeting, giving a general outline of hia views. He declared himself a strong adherent of Sir George Grey, The resolution having been put to the meeting, was carried without a dissentient. In thanking the Association for their confidence, Mr Andrews accepted tho invitation, and announced himself a candidate for the representation of the city, and said he would take an early opportunity of declaring his views fully at a public meeting. A similar resolution, asking Mr Gapes to come forward as a candidate with Sir George Grey and Mr Andrews was carried unanimously.
