FIRE IN TUAM STREET.
Shortly after half-past soT«n o'clock laßfc Tuesday'.tke alarm was given by the Lichfield street bell, and on enquiry it was found that the cottage in Tuarn street occupied by Mr W. Hoakins was on fire. So far as can bo learned, the fire originated in the back part of the premises, which contained firo rooms, and formed part of a row of cottages of similar character exf ending from Madras street to FreEbford Hous". The alarm was given by a Mrs Carter residing on tho opposite side of tho street, who Baw smoke issuing from tho building. Mr Hoskins at tho time was absent at tho Theatre Royal. The fire brigade mustered quickly, and the two steam engines were placed at tho tank opposite Wilson, Sawtell and Co.'s, and the hand engino near the prenrsss on fire, water being obtained for the latter in the vicinity. Mr Superintendent Harris, finding that tho efforts of the brigade would enable him to confine the fire to the building in which it originated, only put on one of the steamers. The only danger was to a stable on tho premises of Freehford House, but fortunately by a timely supply of water this was prevented, and the further spread of tho fire averted. Notwithstanding tho houee being of weed a 4. tho fire spreading rapidly, the greater part of the furniture was saved, and was afterwards taken to Mr J. Gr. Hawkes' salerooms for safety. Mr Hoskins" wardrobe and plate were saved, but a few of his books and a small portion of Mrs Hoskins' wardrobe were damaged. The building was insured in tho New Zealand office for £230. The firo police, under Captain Mitchell, and the regular police, under Mr Inspector Hickson, mustered smartly and rendered efficient service.
