LICENSING COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Maech 18. The adjourned quarterly meeting of the Licensing Court for the Christchurch district was held yesterday at noon. Commissioners present Messrs Q-. L. Mellish, R. J. S. Harman, and GK L. Lee. new Applications, The following new applications were dealt with:— F. J. Harris, for an hotel, Second street, Gasworks road, Sydenham. Mr R. D, Thomas supported the application, which was opposed by Mr Joyce. Mr Thomas said the house was not yet built, and submitted the plans to the Bench, and also a plan of the district, showing the position of the house. Mr Joyce had no objection to either the house or the manner in which it was to be built, only it was not wanted. He was in a position to prove that the land on which it was to be built was not even purchased. The application was refused. John Hughes, for an hotel, Victoria road and North town belt, Mr Izard appeared for the applicant. This was a similar application, and the Bench decided that a house was not required in (hat locality, Henry Qualmer for an hotel, Bingsland. Mr R. 1), Thomas appeared for the applicant. The application was opposed, and a petition presented against it. Mr Thomas stated the former objection was the proximity of the site of the Cemetery to the house, but this objection did not now exist, as in

all probability the Cemetery would soon be closed. No notice of opposition had been given, and there was no other licensed house within a considerable distance The applicant was mt putting up the house as a *pec*l»tioa; he was going to put hie capital into it ana reside in it, and carry it on himself. The Bench said these considerations did not weigh, as they had made up their mind that a licensed house was not required in the neighborhood. The Bench thought that even if a house were put up the license would not be granted. R. J, Sutherland,'for an hotel on the Northeast Town belt. Mr Neck supported the application, and described the house as alreaay built and desirable in every respect. The Bench did not think it was required, and refused the application. Henry Keane, for an hotel, Barbadoes and Fourth street. Mr Cowlishaw appeared for the applicant. He stated that he had kept an hotel in Auckland, and that the police would report favourably on the fitness of the site, the description of house proposed to bo built, and the character of the applicant. All the conditions were in favour of a license being granted. The Bench said they were not prepared to grant the license. S. Lawrence, for an hotel, Colombo street, Sydenham. The application was made in person. The applicant said an objection had been made on his former application that the accommodation was insufficient. He had altered his plans and that objection no longer existed. The Rev. S. Macfarlane opposed the application, on the ground of the site of the house being close to two churches and the school. Mr Lawrence said this was a misapErehension; where he proposed to build hi* ouse was a quarter of a mile from any place of worship, and he had a petition, numerously and influentially signed, that the house would really bo a boon to th* neighbourhood. The Bench declined to entertain the application. Alfred Piper, for an hotel, Selwyn street, Addington. Mr Cowlishaw appeared for the applicant. The applicant already had a wine and boer license, and he now proposed to erect a good substantial and large notel. The Rev. J. White stated that notice of objection had been lodged against the granting of the license, and there was a petition against it. If any other objection were needed, he might say the house was immediately opposite a church and Sunday-school. The Mayor of Sydenham also opposed the license on the same grounds. Mr Cowlishaw submitted that the church was erected after the license for the sale of wine and beer had been granted. The fact of an hotel license being applied for in place of the one already held by the applicant, he considered a guarantee for th# additional future respectability of the house. The application was declined. John Somers, for an hotel, Sydenham. Mr R. D. Thomas supported the application, and Mr McOonnel opposed it, and stated the requirements of the statute had been complied with. Mr Thomas put in the plans, which showed the house was to be a handsome and substantial one. A petition signed by 200 name* of householders in the locality was put in. The house was already built and completely furnished, and there were already eleven boarders in it. The locality was Colombo street South, fronting on the show grounds. Mr Inspector Hickson reported favorably on the house and the manner in which, it was conducted. Mr McConnel urged there was no necessity for an hotel there, and it was only seventeen chains from the Wesleyan church. There was no traffic which would render an hotel an accommodation for travellers, and there were ne great works in the vicinity to demand such a convenience. There was also a numerously-signed petition against it. Under these circumstances he submitted that the license should be refused. CONFIRMATION OF TEMPORARY TRANSFERS.
