One named O Connor swam across the stream., and on hia way back the others saw him sink, as if ho had been seized with cramp. One of them rushed in to save him, but O’Connor clutched at him frantically, nearly dragging his friend to the bottom. The latter got away from the drowning man, and reached shore exhausted. Auckland City West Election. Auckland, January 20. Already four names are mentioned as probable candidates for the seat in the House of Representatives for City West, in the place of Mr Dignau. The names mentioned are Mr W. J. Hurst, who arrived by last mail from England, and was formerly Mayor of Auckland, Mr R. Brett, Mayor, Messrs Patrick Darby, and David Goldie. One of the main questions of the elections will be education. The whole of the immigrants per Maravil were engaged in twelve hours after landing. A considerable number have gone as bnshmon. The female servants were all taken up in two hours after landing. It is rumored that Mr Tole has resigned the office of Commissioner on Colonial Education.
