The sickness at Cyprus is alarming. Four hundred are in the hospital. By an explosion in the Gothard tunnel 140 persons were killed or injured. September 27. The troops are rapidly massing ; 8000 are at Mooltan and 6000 at Kohat. The Government are taking energetic steps, and the garrison of Qucttah is reinforced. The Government has resolved upon massing troops on the frontier, with a view to early operations, in case it is found necessary to undertake a march to Cabul. London, September 26. Orders have been given to mass troops At Quettah, with a view to an immediate advance into Candahar. It is expected to detach Kyber Pass from the Ameer. Although the British Government are in possession of evidence showing that Russia promised the Ameer a subsidy and a portion of Indian territory in the event of a successful war, they desire to leave the Afghan question entirely in the bands of Lord Lytton, and avoid dragging Russia into the dispute. The Turks have been defeated by insurgents in Thessaly., The Austrians occupied Swarak, Mr Gladstone published a letter thanking South Australia for the congratulatory address on his conduct on the Eastern Question. Sir M. Hicks Beach, in a speech at Chipping Norton, warmly praised the patriotic behaviour of the colonies during the Eastern crisis, testifying to the loyalty and the unity of the Empire.
