Sons of Temperance.—Brethren of the Perseverance Division, No. 4, are summoned to meet at half-past seven this evening. The offices will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Death at Port Lett.— lntelligence was received from Port Levy this morning that a man named Frantz Schmidt, a German, had been found dead in the bush at the back of Mr Fleming’s house. The police went down in the s.s. Lyttelton to make the necessary inquiries. City Councillors Election— Very little public interest has been manifested during the day over the civic elections, and the proceedings formed a remarkable contrast to those of the September election. Up to two o’clock voters came in very languidly, and the returning officer and scrutineers had almost a sinecure. The poll will be declared at noon to-morrow. A Dangerous Fall.— W. H. Bourne, third mate of the ship Bride of Lome, had a narrow escape from death this morning. He was crossing the corner of the main hatch when his foot slipped, and he fell on his side on the ballast, a distance of about twenty-one feet. 'Wonderful to relate, he appears to be fast recovering from the effects of the shock, not a bone having been broken. Conference of Road Board Chairmen. —At the meeting of the Conference of Road Board Chairmen, held this morning at the office of Mr J. L. Wilson, it was resolved to forward a petition to the House of Representatives on the subject of the Canterbury Laud Fund. In the course of the meeting a telegram was read from the Hon. John Hall, stating that the Canterbury members had agreed to a compromise offered by the Government. The petition was to be presented to the House this afternoon. Regatta News.—Mr Miller, the builder of the celebrated whaleboat Ringarooma, has received orders to build two rowing whaleboats of a similar kind for running in the interprovincial champion whaleboat race at the Lyttelton regatta next New Year’s day. The late Rev. R. S. Jackson. —It is proposed to place a window in the parish church at Prebbleton in memory of the late Mr Jackson, who was formerly incumbent of the parish. A subscription list has already been opened, and a considerable amount of ■npport has been obtained. The Boating Season—ln consequence of the somewhat doubtful state of the weather on Saturday morning, it was considered advisable to postpone the opening of the boating season for a week. Accordingly the season will be inaugurated on Saturday next by a procession of boats and a series of scratch matches.
Blocking the Thoeougiieaee. —On Siturday the office recently occupied by Packe Bros, was in course of removal from Hereford street, when it suddenly came to a standstill, and remained some little time. Alter a while however it was once more set in motion, but again came to grief by the breaking of an axle on the railway line crossing Colombo street, and it remained for some little time there. Ultimately it made another move towards its destination, which no doubt it will reach in safety ere long.
Dwellings in Chbisxchuech and Sydenham. There are altogether 2411 dwellings in the city of Christchurch, and 1265 in the borough of Sydenham. The one roomed habitations number 22 and 15 for the city and borough respectively. Of two roomed houses there are 232 and 268 ; of three and four roomed, 985 and 697 ; of five and six roomed, 613 and 193 ; of houses having more than six rooms, 538 and 69 ; and of houses in which the number of rooms is unspecified, 21 aud 23. The average number of persons living in a house is 5.5 for the city, and 5.1 for Sydenham. Rise at Kaiapol— On Saturday evening, a portion of the sheds connected with the tannery of Mr F. Thorne, Rangiora, were destroyed by fire. The fire was first noticed by W. Kennedy at 7.45. It had then burned a hole through the currier’s shed, near a fireplace. There was a good supply of water, but, the inside of the building being already on fire, very few articles were saved. Sergeant Pratt and the Fire Biigade, with its engine, were in attendance, but could do no more than prevent the fire spreading. Mr Thorne’s loss he estimates at £350. The building was insured with the National Company for £/0 ; the stock for £l5O and the tools for £3O. The fire is believed to have originated accidentally from embers left that day at noon in the fireplace, Theatee Royal. —“ Hamlet was repeated on Saturday night at the Theatre Royal on the occasion of Mr Chaplin s last night in Christchurch. It is a matter tor regret that an otherwise satisfactory performance should have been marred by the incompetence, to use no harsher term, of one of the leading members of the company. Christ church audiences are far from being unsympathetic in cases of genuine indisposition on the part of a performer, but this indulgence was taxed to its fullest extent on Saturday night. Occasions have arisen frequently of late when, in the interest of the public, and also of the management, it has been necessary to point out and comment upon the shortcomings of some of the subordinate characters in the pieces, and it would be manifestly unfair to wink at an exhibition o f. well say incompetence—so palpable as to call forth the disapprobation of the audience. Wore this an isolated case it might have been overlooked, but it has been so trequent of late that, in justice to the rest of the company and the public who patronise the theatre, it cannot be passed over in silence,
