The Globe. WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 1878. NEWS OF THE DAY.

Effects of the Gale —During the gale this morning, the Presbyterian Church, at Leeston, a new building on the eve of completion, was blown down. The cost of the building was £7OO. The West Coast Bailway.— A meeting of the settlors of the Malvern district was held last night in the schoolroom, Waddington, about forty being present, to take into consideration the question of the formation of the West Coast Eailway via the Waimakariri and Taipo Passes, Mr Job Jebson occupied the chair, and pointed out at some length the advantages which, he contended, would accrue, not only to the people of the district but to the colony generally upon the carrying out of such a scheme. Several resolutions on the subject were moved and carried unanimously, and a petition is to be drawn up and forwarded to the Government without delay. Bazaar. —A sale of useful and fancy articles in aid of the building fund of the United Wesleyan Free Church was commenced today at noon in the St. Asaph street schoolroom, which has been fitted up for the occasion. The articles exhibited tor sale are of the usual miscellaneous character, and show much taste on the part of the ladies who manufactured them, the chief contributors being members of the congregation, Sundayschool teachers, pupils, and friends. There are four stalls, presided over by Mesdames Macfarlane, Eobson, Fisher, Oatway, Cook, and Caygill, and the Mieses Oaygill and Robson. The refreshment stall is under the charge of Mrs Rogers and Mrs Hunter. There is very little doubt that the attractions of the sale, combined with the cause for which it has been got up, will considerably swell the building fund. Accident at Lyttelton. —J. McDougal, one of the railway hands, was badly hurt at Lyttelton yesterday. He was working at the Ringarooma at the Steamers’ Wharf, when, in shifting some trucks, he was caught between the buffers, and it is feared severely injured internally. Temperance Hotel.— The secretary states that the shares in this company are being rapidly taken up, and that there is no longer any doubt as to its success. Mr G. L. Mellish has joined the directory. Fire Police.—The annual meeting of this body was held last evening, when the report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, and the officers for the ensuing year appointed. A report appears elsewhere.
