When it is considered that Mr Craig, at tho time of his death, had been a member of the society for lens than three years, this generous act (remarks a ..Queensland journal) speaks well for the liberal management of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. A Reckless Education Boaed.—The “ Wellington Post ” advises the Minister for Education to loot up the Wanganui papers, so that he may learn from the reports therein what the Wanganui Education Board is about. It seems that the Board has Veen “outrunning the constable,” and is now fairly on the road to insolvency. One of the members, Mr John Bryce, M H.R., has protested strongly against this line of action, and at a recent meeting of the Board somewhat of a stormy scene took place. The chairman of the Board, however, put down Mr Bryce by enunciating the astounding doctrine “ that the Board should get into debt in the hope that the Government would step in and relieve it from its embarrassments.” In other words, the Board proposed deliberately to exceed the income placed at its disposal, with the idea that once the liabilities had been incurred the Government would be almost forced to pay them. The Land Ceizb in Wellington.—A contributor to the “ Wanganui Herald ” tells the following story ;—The land craze seems at fever heat just now in Wellington, Tho euctioneers there must be reaping a golden harvest out of the crop of new townships they are continually putting up for the highest bidder to be the purchaser of. In this connection a good thing occurred not a hundred miles from here lately. One of our settlers, with a keen eye to business, laid off a portion of his estate into town lots, and showed the plan to a Wellington speculator, who at once made him an offer for the lot, which was accepted, and my friend chuckled to think how expeditiously and inexpensively he had worked off his township, but his joy was somewhat lessened on learning (hat his astute client had traded off the whole lot at a profit of some £2000! He won’t rise so quickly to a Wellington fly next time he has a township to sell I fancy. Political —The Hon. E.
