Broome’s recovery is expected unless erysipelas supervenes. Crowe has previously been convicted fifteen times for drunkenness, larceny, and other offences. A lire at Newtown this morning destroyed a large dwelling-house in Dublin street, occupied by two married couples named Gladding and Harrison. The property belonged to John Jeffrey. Several adjoining buildings were endangered, but the fire was prevented from spreading by the efforts of the Newtown and Auckland brigades. The occupants escaped with t heir lives, but no furniture was saved. The building was insured in the South British for £125. Wanganui, July 15. The three-masted schooner Ellerton, from Auckland, was signalled yesterday outside the Heads lying safely at anchor. During the night, tho anchors must have dragged. This morning she was discovered amongst the breakers riding heavily at anchor, with her bows on to tho surf half way down the south spit. She is in a dangerous position, but the wind having modep ited there was a hotter chance of getting her off. The schooner Forest Queen is in a very dangerous position above tho bridge, Tho wind failed her in passing through this morning, ai d a strong fresh carried her against the piles. She heeled over to such an extent as to threaten to capsize. The foremast whs just cut away in time to save the vessel. Her forepart is now under the bridge, but still in a very dangerous position. She is unable to discharge on the bridge and lighten, as the cargo is too heavy. Westpobt, July 15. There has been a rainfall during the last twenty-four hours of seven and a half inches. The road to Reefton is nearly impassable The Lyell district people are almost starved out through the stoppage of supplies en r flute. The steamer Result, which traded between Westport and Karamea, was wrecked on Thursday last, about half way from the Karamea. She was in the surf several hours. There were no lives lost. Later. During the year ending June 30th, 1431 nominations, equal to 1235 - statute adults, were made through the Dunedin Immigration office for free passages to the colony.
