NOTICE TO MARINERS.
The “Gazette” of Thursday last contains the following t New Hebrides—Port Resolution, Island of Tanna Capt in Kilgonr, of the Stanley schooner, reports that the formation of Port Resolution has been considerably altered by be effects of an earthquake which took place at 7 a.m. on the 10th of January, and which was followed by a wave sum to h ive been some 20ft. in height. The shock lasted about half a minute, throwing down—according to the report of Mr Neilsou, the missionary—about forty acres of the high land forming the North Head. From the rocks on the N.W. side of the eutrance to the large shelving rocks immediately-op-po-ite the missio'ary’s house Capt. Kilgonr found no change t o interfere with the navigation ; but the rock it-elf appeared to have been raised lOfo, and a long ledge of coral rock, extending from it S. by E. about fifty yards, thrown up above high water, taoreby uarruwing the harbor to that extent, just above what was formerly the best anchorage He further s ates that the harbor now presents a totally different appearance to that shown on the charts and described in the sailing directions, the principal changes having taken place on the western shore, while the depth of water in the port has shoaled about a fathom. Vessels are cautioned to he very careful if leaving the mid-channel, and not to proceed further up the harbor than Missionary’s Point. G, F. Heath, Commander R.N., Portmaster.
