The result of the polling was as follows : E. J. Leo. J. Bennie. Southbridgc 272 34 Leeston 126 297 Brooksidc 80 5(5 478 387 Mr Edward James Lee was therefore declared duly elected. The result was received with very marked expressions of feeling. Mr Lee, in thanking his supporters, alluded to the river question, which had been so argued as to tell very much against himself in a considerable portion of the district. As to that, however, ho was confident tliut the conservators had done good honest work, which would at some time be acknowledged. As to the Road Boards he would endeavour to Ins utmost to promote their interests, as affecting Ihe whole district, which he was proud to have been elected to represent. Mr Rennie, who was received with cheers, thanked those who had voted for him, many of whom had come from a distance at some personal discomfort. He had been called rather too late into the field to win, and if he had to be beaten, he was glad that it was by so good a man as Mr Lee.
