ENGLAND v. COLONIES.
This match was played out on Saturday last, and was not so interesting as was anticipated, owing to the collapse of England in their second innings. The game stood—England, 114 ; and Colonies, 161 and 49 with six wickets down, when Hartland and W. Frith, the not outs for 14 and 4 respectively, took their places at the wickets. The latter soon made a fine cut off Ashby into the fence, but as there was no arrangement about counting for boundary hits, six were run. It was a good cut and worth four at any time, but in trying an on drive Frith was well caught by Corfe. Seven for 64. Ollivier joined Hartland. His first ball from Ashby, a real trimmer, hit the bails exactly in the middle, but they did not fall off. lie then began to score quickly, putting together 28 by a 4, five 3’s, Ac., before ho was caught off the slows, which had been put on at Ashby’s end. He gave two difficult chances previously, but escaped. Hartland, in the meantime, had been scoring steadily, and the total showed 115 for eight wickets. E. Fowler followed and began scoring fast, an example which was imitated by his partner. Several changes of bowling were tried, but without effect until Corfe went on at the lower end, when Fowler gave a catch to point which was not refused. His total of 19 included a 4, two 3’s, a 2, and singles, and during his stay at the wickets 41 runs were put on. Fuller failed to stop a good one from Corfe, but Peter was not to be so quickly disposed of, and another change of bowling was tried. However, the last wicket was taken, a catch at longstop causing Peter to retire. He made a fine hit to leg for 4 during his innings. Hartland carried out his bat for a fine innings, and his play throughout was a good exhibition of cricket. It is to be hoped that he will continue to practice, as with proper attention now he should make one of our best batsmen in a few years. It is now a very long time since any of our colonial cricketers have shown good cricket, the last to obtain a place in the first eleven being J. Fowler, and we are glad to see such a promising young player. His total of 63, the highest in the match, was made without a chance and includes three 4’s, four 3’s, eight 2’s, and singles. The score at the fall of the last wicket being 173, thus giving England 221 to get to win, a task which proven much too great. Corfe and Neilson were first to appear : the former received the ball from C. Frith, and drove the third in the over for 3, which he followed up by driving the first from Fuller for a similar number. Neilson soon afterwards made a drive for 4 off C. Frith, Corfe supplementing this by a fine hit for 5 off Fuller, which was scored to Neilson as a 4. This was too good to last, and Neilson, who had given a chance in the previous over, was then neatly caught at third man—--19 —l —9 being the result of the first wicket, when H. W. Moore filled the vacancy ; but Gorfe was not allowed to remain long, ns he missed a straight one from C. Frith. 25—2—13. Ashby joined Moore, but it was of no use, as at 32 both batsmen were clean bowled. Stevens only scored 1, and Secretan was run out by Austin mistaking a field. Seven, eight, and nine wickets fell for 39, when Mac Donnell and Morrice got together, and the captain, wanting to finish the match, told the bowlers to pitch the ball up, so as to catch them out, as the time was getting short, but it did not pay, as 29 runs were quickly put on before Fuller caused Morrice to retire, after scoring 15 by two 4’s, two 2’s, &c. Stewart, the last man, did not alter the score, and the innings closed for 69, the Colonies thus winning by 151 runs. The following is the score of the match : Colonies. Ist innings. 2nd innings.
