KAIAPOI REGATTA.

A public meeting of persons interested in holding the annual Jlaiapoi regatta was held on Thursday evening in the Borough Council Chamber. About fifteen were present, including Messrs J. O. Jones and T. Grierson, as representing the Christchurch, boating clubs. J)r Dudley (ex-commodore) was voted to the chair. The Chairman stated there was a balance of about £2O in hand to the credit of the regatta account, and it would be for those present to decide if there was a reasonable prospect of bringing out crows and collecting subscrip, tions sufficient to ensure the regatta being successful. If they concluded this could be done, then the next important matter was to fix a date, which, if possible, should be a holiday and a day when the tide would suit. In ijig own joiod, he had decided that tha 18th

March was very suitable in both these respects. Mr Burnip entirely agreed with "the chairman’s remarks, and moved —“ That the Kaiapoi regatta of 1878 take place on Monday, March 18th,” as on this day, he pointed out, it would be high water in the river at 3.30 p.m., (thus allowing the committee to arrange for the champion four-oared race in the middle of all the events, and giving visitors an excellent opportunity to be present.

Mr J. Sims seconded the motion, and expressed the opinion that, if the committee only worked with a will, the regatta might be made more attractive than any previous one. The motion was unanimously agreed to. Mr J. Lowthian Wilson paid a compliment to Dr Dudley’s earnestness in the promotion of sports of all kinds, and proposed he should be invited to act as commodore.

Mr M. C. Moran seconded the nomination, which was agreed to nem. dig. The Chairman said while he would prefer to give way in these affairs to younger men and take a rest, he would agree once more to fill his old position—[CheersJ—trusting he would receive every assistance from the officers and committee in the discharge of his duties.

On the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Burnip, Mr 0. Whitefoord was unanimously elected judge. Mr Moran proposed, Mr J. H. Schmidt seconded—“ That Mr John Sims bo appointed starter." [Hear, hear.] Carried. Mr Sims for a time declined to act, but ultimately consented.

Mr Wilson was elected hon. secretary and treasurer, and it was resolved —“ That the committee consist of eighteen members, viz,, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs R. Macfarlane, W. Burnip J. H. Schmidt, F.Bosuestow, J. 0. Jones, Dr. Ovonden, T. Grierson, W. Barnard, M. C. Moran, A. Balch, J. Beharrell, W. May, J. Dawson, W. Eckersley, W. Fraser, and F. Pearce. It was suggested as recommendations to the committee that arrangements bo made for minor events, duck hunt, greasy polo, and other amusements between the races; and that the course of the Champion Race might be two miles, instead of three, and the distance of the other races also shortened.

Mr J ones pointed out that the committee might probably see its way to offer a prize for four-oared crews, the members of which have never won in previous regattas, and moved a proposition to that effect, Mr Schmidt seconded the motion, which was put and agreed to, the secretary undertaking to have the same duly represented to the committee.

It was then resolved that the first meeting of the committee take place on Friday, 22nd, at 7.30. Subscriptions amounting to £ls 10s were promised in the room. The meeting then adjourned.
