PRACTICE FOR THE COLONIAL REGATTA. A CAPSIZE. [By Telegbaph.] [feom the special bepobteb of the pbess.] Wanganui, February 11. None of the champion crews were out before breakfast. The Canterbury (Duncan's) were first afloat at 10 15, going up to the champion course. They started very nicely, with an even stroke, and were followed by many critical eyes. The opinion was that this crew must win, bar accidents. I saw them coming into the last mile from home against a very strong wind and tide, and rowing very hard. The boat was travelling well, when Btroke motioned Cox to go over to the other bank for shelter, _ but the youngster, who is the boy from Christchurch, went into one of the flags. The next to be seen of them was the boat upeide dovra, and the crew swimming quietly. The cox. sank directly the boat capsized, but Duncan got hold of him, and, with the assistance of Taylor, put him on the boat. The crew are none the worse, with the exception of stroke, who got a nastv smack on the wrist from an oar, but I do not think it will prevent his rowing. The Wellingtonians got away at 10.30, going in Venus Transit three miles up the river. They still row in their old style ; stroke and No. 3 too pull in a long way the best form, and with no end of coaching might make good oars, but I am afraid they have got set too long in this bad style. With such an amount of strength in the boat she might be able to travel much faster, but they have no idea of using it. Bow is, no doubt, very strong, but he rolls enough for a dozen men, which appears strange after the amount of sculling he has done. They came home very fairly, strength making the boat go, but they have no swing at all. The Canterbury Rowing Uub left in the " Canterbury" (inrigger), K about eleven, rowing in nice time and plenty ot swing, with the exception of No. 3, who does not make sufficient use of his height hardly, swinging and rowing with too round a baclc. No. 2 might finish his stroke better, and stroke is rowing a rather short stroke. I am tfwi this CWW OW »«ver Jj?e with tUe Others.
in the championship, but fancy them more than most people for the inrigged race, their boat ought to assist them a great deal. I shall now give my tips for the principal races to-morrow : Pair-oar—Eoman Fall, Ist. Four-oar inrigged—-Venus Transit (Wellington), Ist; Canterbury (C.R.C.), 2nd, the latter clone up Scullers—Hearn (W R.C.), Ist; Walk.r (W.11.C), 2nd. Whal.-boat-Elvira(if Duncan's Canterbury crew row her), if nofc Danger, Ist. Heathcote is still favorite for the championship.
