This feeling, while it is a great compliment to those for whom it is evinced, helps very much to make them give full effect to the fun of the pieces, upon which bo much depends. To-night “ Chilperic” is to be produced. Subsidies to Boeoughs.— A voucher from the Colonial Treasurer forwarding the subsidy for the last half year to the borough of Christchurch, and a report thereon by the Finance Committee, caused a long discussion last night at the City Council. Straying Cattle. —When the cases against owners of straying cattle were called on at the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Inspector Hickson asked that a heavier fine might be imposed against those persons who had been previously fined, as the police were kept constantly engaged at this work, to the neglect of more important duty. His Worship, however, thought that were he to increase the penalty it might prove oppressive, and that owners of cattle would find it to their advantage to prevent a recurrence of the offence if they were sharply looked after, and fined five shillings on each occasion. The police could combine the work of looking after straying stock with their other duties. The crew have now decided to row in fixed seats, as the sliding seats made them too high above the boat. They had their first trial on the fixed seats last evening, and the boat travelled at a wonderful pace, to the gratification of the numerous onlookers. The crew have made a change in their coxswain, Dunnage, whose weight is 3st. 101 b , taking the place of Dixon, who has been steering splendidly throughout the training, but by the wish of a majority of the crew, the feather-weight of the former has gained him the post.

Roman Catholic Cuuech, Akaeoa.— Mission services have been held in the Roman Catholic Church, Akaroa, daily during the past week to large and attentive congregations by Bishop Redwood and Father Hennebery. The services were held twice a day, and on Friday, the closing day of the mission, Bishop Redwood administered the rite of confirmation to seventeen candidates, preaching an eloquent and impressive sermon on the subject and on the unity of the church, Father Hennebery explained some of the recent schemes of the church for the propagation of the Romish faith. Wo learn from the Rev. Father that upwards of eighty persons have taken the pledge during his stay in Akaroa. The Bishop and Fathers Hennebery and Donovan left for Christchurch yesterday. Chilpebic. —To-night the Soldene Comic Opera Company will produce Herve’s greatest London success ‘‘Chilperic.” Considerable interest attaches to this production by the present company, inasmuch as it was originally played by Mies Soldene’s company in London under the author’s direction, and was continued for 300 consecutive nights. Of the original caste, in addition to Miss Soldene, there are five others. One of the features of this opera, too, is the famous umbrella dance, in which the whole company takes part, including Miss Slater, who is pronounced to be a rival of Sara. Considering the success of the opera at the hands of Miss Lydia Howarde, when simply played in part as an extravaganza, there are sure to be crowded houses to witness its complete production by Miss Soldene. Midnight Laeks. —Young men, who are in the habit of amusing themselves at night time by rempying gates off their hinges, and otherwise damaging property, may learn to their cost that the law does not give a magistrate the option of imposing a fine on a second conviction. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday two charges of removing gates on New Year’s night were proved against three lads. His Worship inflicted a fine on the first charge, but informed the accused that hq had no option on the second charge but to send them to prison, and he was also compelled to add hard labor to the sentence. Desiring, however, to look at the act as a foolish joke, ho would only sentence them to six hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. He hoped that this would prove a deterrent to them and to others.
