Lord Canarvon, in replying to a question as to tho policy of the Government, declared that circumstances had not materially changed since Lord Derby's speech in November, and Russia's rejection of the offer of mediation was no affront to England ; adding that nobody desired a repetition of the Crimea. Wool and copper is unchanged. New Zealand hemp firm. New Zealand Four and a Half Per Cents, 105. January 5. Frequent meetings have been held throughout England advocating the maintenance of British neutrality. General Gourko is successfully advancing towards Sophia. The Turks are falling back on Ichtiman.

It is stated that the Cabinet is divided, the Premier, Mr Gathorne Hardy, and Lord Cairns favouring wer, the Marquis of Salisbury, Lord Carnarvon, Mr Cross, and Earl Derby against; the others are doubtful. Mukhtar Pasha, has arrived at Stamboul. Cardinal Manning hus proposed a conclave of Cardinals at Malta. The Italian Cardinals object. The Qneen has created a new Order—the Imperial Crown of India. Females are eligible. New Zealand hemp is firm.

Melbourne, January 6. It is stated that the Government are using all the available gun cotton for the purpose of manufacturing torpedoes, at Williamstown, to be laid across the channel for the defence of the port, as recommended by Sir W. Jeryo^se.

Dunedin, January 7. Messrs G-oldsbrough and Co., of Melbourne, iirlvise their Dunedin agents by telegram that, during December they sold 18,000 bales of wool. They report the market firm for good wool ; dull for inferior. The prices realised were—G-veasy, from 7d to la 3d ; washed, Is 3d to 2s l:,'d. Ministers are still flooded with deputations on every conceivable subject. In reply to one deputation, Mr Macandrew said it would be inexpedient and suicidal to relax the restrictions on the importation of stock from Europe and America. The Government have intimated that they will give railway passes to parts of Otago to those desirous of getting up entertainments in aid of the Benevolent Society. Margaret McDermid, who sued the Port Chalmers Corporation for £IO,OOO damages for the construction of waterworks, was awarded £ISOO. The match between the Australian and Otago cricketers takes place on the 12th, 14th, and 15th of January. The total amount contributed this year by the children of the Knox Church Sunday School for the support of the missionary schooner Dayspnng was £49 12s 6d.
