CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
The adjourned general meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held yesterday at Eadcliffe’s Hotel. MrH.P. Lance occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. THE AUTUMN MEETING. The Chairman said that the first subject was the date of their Autumn meeting. It was forgotten at the time that the date fixed was in Lent, and as it would not be advisable to hurt the feelings of any of the supporters of racing, it might perhaps he well to consider if it could not be fixed for Easter Monday and Tuesday. Sir Cracroft Wilson said he disliked very much altering the date when once fixed, but as it had been represented that many of the supporters of racing could not attend in Lent perhaps it would be as well to change the date as suggested by Mr Lance. Mr Frank Brittan proposed that the races take place on Easter Monday and Tuesday. Dr. Prins seconded the motion. Mr Wynn Williams said that on Easter Monday and Tuesday the public generally made holiday. Now they were asked to postpone their races until this date to suit the opinions of some few people. He should move —“ That the date of the races as already fixed be adhered to.” Mr Delamain, if Mr Williams would propose that resolution, would second it with much pleasure. Dr. Prins said a number of persons had spoken to Captain Clogstoun and others, asking them to get the races altered from Lent. They must recollect that they did not race for racing only, but for public sport, hence they ought to consider the objections made as regarded Lent. After some discussion, Mr Wynn Williams withdrew his amendment. The motion was then put and carried by 8 to 5. The programme as brought up by the committee was then considered. The Chairman said that the only alteration in the programme from last year was that they had put 50 sovs. on to the Champagne, and had inserted a Free Handicap of 50 sovs., three-quarters of a mile. The programme as brought up by the committee was put seriatim and agreed to. A DISPUTED BET. The question of the disputed bet, which stood over from last meeting, was discussed at great length, and after reading the correspondence it was resolved —“ That although the C.J.C. consider that the bookmaker was liable to pay the whole amount of the bet, the gentleman making the bet having accepted £2O the club upon the evidence before them decline to decide the matter.” THE BRIBERY CASE. In answer to Dr. Prins, The Chairman said the matter of re-open-ing the Bribery case had been referred to the committee. The meeting then adjourned.
