Land Sale. —The “ Timaru Herald ” mentions that the farm of 404 acres at Island Flat, belonging to Messrs McKay, lias been bought privately for the sum of £4040, by Mr J. Johnstone,
Local Boakd of Health. —At a special meeting of the City Council last night it was resolved, “ That this Council desires to be constituted the Local Board of Health.” It was also resolved to forward the resolution to the Colonial Secretary.
Timaru Harbor Works. —Mr John doodah, one of the successful competitors for the plans of the proposed breakwater, has elected Engineer to the Timaru Harbor Board. Legal. —The Supreme Court will sit in its matrimonial and divorce jurisdiction on Monday next, when the case of Mitchell v Mitchell will be taken. The facts will be tried before a jury. On Tuesday, should the case be finished, a banco sitting will take place. Borough of Sydenham.—A large and influential deputation waited upon Mr Geo. Booth this morning, and obtained his consent, to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for the office of Mayor of the new Borough. Nomination papers for Mayor must be addressed to the returning officer, and lodged at the Colombo road schoolroom, before noon on Tuesday next. Carrier Pigeons. —The “ Oamaru Mail’s ” carrier pigeons travelled from Duntroon to Oamaru, a distance of thirty miles, in twentyfive minutes. Some pigeons belonging to Mr J. H. Wood, accomplished the distance between Lyttelton and Akaroa in twentyeight minutes, carrying news which was published in the “Mail.” Dr. Inglis. —The Dunedin papers notice the death of Dr. Inglis, of the Taieri, one of the best known and most widely respected medical practitioners in Otago. The cause of death was heart disease, which followed an attack of rheumatic fever, from which the doctor suffered while at college. He had practised in Otago for fifteen years. The Indian Famine. —The meeting convened yesterday by his Worship the Mayor to consider the advisableness of forming an Indian Famine Relief Fund was eminently successful from a financial point of view. A large committee was appointed, and over £4OO was collected in the room, Sir J. C. Wilson giving £IOO and Mr G. Q-ould £SO. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. The Asylum Journal. —After the style of the “Morningside Mirror,” and similar periodicals printed in the Home Asylums, there is now issued for circulation among the inmates of Sunnyside Asylum, and from the press of the institution, a small but promising monthly journal. Presumedly professional style is affected in the composition of its articles and paragraphs, with a liberal use of the word “ we,” and the community within the asylum may be congratulated upon enjoying what to some of them will be a source of industry, and to others a source of informa* tion and enjoyment. Indian Famine Fund.—A meeting of the committee of the Indian Famine Relief Fund was held this morning at the City Council Chambers, when it was resolved to communicate with the various municipalities and Road Boards throughout the provincial district, asking their co-operation in raising funds. In Christchurch to day two tables have been placed, one at the Bank of New Zealand, and one opposite the White Hart Hotel, where subscriptions are being solicited from the country visitors towards the fund, and with most satisfactory results. Including the amount promised yesterday, the sum of nearly £7OO has been already subscribed. To-night Mr Tooraer’s band has liberally agreed to play in Cathedral square from seven to nine o’clock, on which occasion a number of the committee will be present to receive subscriptions from the visitors.
