Intelligence has been received as to the wreck of the ship Julia Keits, from China to Adelaide with a cargo of tea, off the coast of Java. Arthur Barnsley has been arrested and remanded to Wellington charged with forging and uttering a money order.

Auckland, October 3. Union Insurance Company's shares fell today to 12s 6d, sellers. ' At the City Council, to-day, the Mayor was authorised to advertise for subscriptions for the sufferers by the Indian famine. Napier, October 3. Four hundred Union Insurance Company's shares were sold by auction to-day at Lyndon's, and realised from 16s 6d to 18s. Twenty-five National Insurance Company's shares fetched, with dividend, 355. Wellington, October 3. Notice has been given that James McDowell and Joseph Paul, the well-known drapers, have filed a deed of assignment for the benefit of their creditors. Daniel Cooley, employed as gardener at the Hutt for Nathaniel Valentine, cut his throat to-day, nearly severing his head from his body. The Supreme Court has been occupied all day with the case of Mary Ann Truman for child murder. After a short retirement the jury returned a verdict of "Not G-uilty." The Judge sentenced her daughter, Mrs Mudgway, who was found guilty of concealment of birth, to two years' hard labor. The s.s. Hawea will bring this month's mails from Auckland, via the East 'Coast. She will wait for it till Friday night, but, should the mail steamer arrive on Thursday night, the Hawea will start immediately after she has got the mails. Hokitika, October 3.

Two young men, named Thomas Wiltshire and George Greaves, were drowned in the Hokitika river. They were engaged in taking a boat from town to the Maori Reserve sawmill, when one of the horses suddenly slipped into a crab-hole, upsetting his rider, and pulling the other horse after him. The men were on the water for some time, and floated about a hundred yards. A sailor from the schooner Clio swam within ten feet of one of the drowning men. The bodies have not yet been found. The following sentences were passed in the Supremo Court this morning : James Cheeseman (thirty-three), manslaughter, one month, without hard labour; Thomas Walter Longuet, embezzlement (five charges), two years. Charles John Pennycud was found guilty of forgery. George King and Thomas King, maliciously killing a calf, were found guilty. Thomas Jackson, maliciously maiming a horse, was acquitted. Q-eorge Proudfoot's trial is fixed for October 15th, before a special jury. Mr Denniston will prosecute for the Crown. The High School Commission will commence its inquiry to-morrow. The proceedings will be private. The Crown Prosecutor stated to-day that he would intimate to-morrow whether or not the Jones libel case would be taken this session. A few gentlemen met yesterday afternoon for the purpose of forming a new Insurance Company here. (from the correspondents of the press.) Timaru, October 3. The two competitive plans selected by the Harbor Board are from Messrs Allan and Stumbles, Timaru, and Mr J. Groodall, Auckland. Lambing in this district this year is very heavy, and on some stations averages over 150 per cent. Feed is plentiful, and prospects generally are bright. Dunedin, October 3 Cheeseman, charged with manslaughter, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment without hard labor. Longuett, for embezzlement, was sentenced to two years on all charges. Mr Chapman's application for a special jury in Proudfoot's case was opposed by the prosecution, who contemplate employing counsel from Christehurch. The further consideration of the point was postponed till Friday.
