NEWS OF THE DAY.
Toomer V*. Banks.—ln thi3 case, on application being made this morning by Mr CowJishaw, Mr Mellish awarded costs for the plaintiff, £3 3s solicitor's fee, and £3 17s cost of advertisement. Cricket.—The Midland Canterbury Cricket Club will open the season on Saturday next by playing a match, Eleven v. Twenty-two. Hie following are the teams :—The Eleven— Messrs Allen, Fuller, Morice, Mac Donnell Parker, Beeder, Palairet, Gibson, Wood, Watson (Geo.), and Sweet. The Twentymo—Messrs Ashbolfc, Atack, Allard, Bar inger, Birch, Cookson, Fuirhurst, Hart-land, llislop, Hill (T. J.), Hunt, Monck, Main raring, Mclntyre, McCardell, Newman t»avilt, littpo, Thompson (W.), Turner (Geo.), )wen, Williams, Warner, and Wallace. Play will comeucc at 2 p.m., when all players are requested to be preseut.
The Fishing Season. —At the meeting of the council of the Acclimatisation Society, on Tuesday afternoon, it was resolved that the fishing season should not open till the 16th instant, closing on the 31st of March, 1878. The charge for a license is to be 20s. Confirmation at Kaiapoi Episcopalian Church. —On Wednesday afternoon the Eight Eev. the Primate of New Zealand held a confirmation service in this church, at which thirteen candidates were admitted to the sacred rite, after which the Primate delivered an impressive addross to all present.
Supreme Court. —The criminal session came to a close yesterday, when the jury in the case of Carl Kehde, for murder, returned a verdict of " Ghiilty," with a recommendation to mercy. The prisoner was sentenced to death in the usual form. The civil session commences on Monday next, when Monk v Robinson —a common jury case—will be tried. New Insurance Company.—During the past few days there has been some talk as to the formation of another insurance company. The latest and reliable information is that such a company has been formed under the name of the Alliance Insurance Company. A prospectus is shortly to be issued, with a list of the names of the gentlemen who are its promoters. New Bridge over the Avon.—At a largely attended meeting held last evening at the Bingsland schoolroom, the necessity of a cart bridge being erected over the Avon near Ward's Brewery was strongly advocated. Resolutions were carried asking the City Council and Avon and Heathcote Road Boards to take joint action in carrying out the work, instituting a house to house canvass, and opening a subscription list in aid.
