MELANCHOLY CASE OF DROWNING.
A man named J ames Cowley, who resides in Stanmore road, was going to Iris work this morning, shortly after seven o’clock, when he discovered the body of an elderly man in the river at Stanmore bridge, about four yards from the east bank. He reported the circumstance to the police. Previous, however, to their arrival, two men, named Samuel 'Mumford and Thomas Do wen, who arc working at the new Stanmore bridge, had also found the body, and had removed it from the water. The police, on arrival, took steps to convey the body to the Hospital. It was then found to bo that of James Smith, late coach agent, Cashel street. He was seen alive last night at Darrett’s Hotel, where lie retired to bed at the usual hour. He was missing, however, this morning at six o’clock. From a letter found in his bedroom, it is more than probable that deceased did not come to his end by accident. He was to have attended a meeting of Ins creditors this morning, and the facts, which would there be disclosed, anpear to have so preyed on his mind as to have led him to take away his own life. At least such is the presumption, but no doubt till the circumstances connected with the sad case will be elicited and made public at the inquest.
