NEWS OF THE DAY.
Prnm'X Dkatji. —Mrs Rouse, wife of Dr. ,]. T. House, Lyttelton, was found dead in limbed at six o’clock on Saturday evening. The deceased lady had been an invalid for some months past. Dr. House is at present on business in Wellington. New Zealand Sceneky. Some very beautiful chromo-lithographs of Mr John Gully’s views of New Zealand scenery, with descriptive letter-press by Dr Julius \on Haast, have been publislicd by Messi-s Henry Wise and Co., of Dunedin. We have received copies of these valuable pictures, but they are worthy of a more lengthened notice than it is at present possible to give. The character of Mr Gully’s pictures is well-known, and there has apparently been much care taken in reproducing them as chromo-lithographs. When tin) subscription list was about to close, Mr Wise, one of the publishers of the series, made a special trip to England in order to put the production of the work into the very best hands. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting a London firm to undertake their production in anything like a moderate time. After a little [delay, (however, the work of printing Mr Gully’s original water-colours was entrusted to the well-known London firm of Marcus Ward and Co., who carried off the prize at the Philadelphia exhibition of last year for chromo-lithography. Although Marcus Ward and Co. undertook to have the work issued in seven months, they were not able to do so for thirteen months, during which time they were fully employed on the production of the pictures. Ey the results, however, they have fully merited their good name in these chromos. The difficulty of reproducing the tone of water-colour scenery of a country which the chromo-lithographists have never seen will be readily understood by all who know anything of art productions, and to say that the London artists have thoroughly caught the ideas of Mr Gully is sufficient to pronounce the scries a success. We notice, by advertisement in another column, that subscribers in Christchurch will bo supplied to-day. Football. —The announcement that the team chosen to play against the visitors from Dunedin on Wednesday would try conclusions with the rest of the club had the effect - of inducing a strong muster of trie latter to put in an appearance on Cranmer square on Saturday afternoon to take part in the contest, and the weather being beautifully fine a large number of visitors assembled to watch the result. The representative team, though playing two men short, were able to more than hold their own. Up till nearly half-past four o’clock each side had scored half a point only, but after this the representatives proved too strong for their numerous opponents. By a good run Barker got a touch-down for the blues, but the try, though an easy one, was a failure. Some tough scrimmaging then ensued in the club quarters, and the bail being taken through, J. Millton by a fine drop narrowly missed kicking a goal, the ball striking the rope and dropping underneath. A series of scrimmages then took place in different parts of the field, and towards the end of the last spell Barker was again successful in securing a touch-down, which was converted into a goal by a good kick from Hartland. Before the close of the game the club had managed to add another half-point to their score, but beyond this the blues had things pretty much their own way, the match finally resulting in their favour by 9’, points to If points. Taking into consideration the fact that they had nearly two to one against them, the representatives must be congratulated on the successful issue of the vaine. Undoubtedly the selection committee have chosen a very strong team to uphold the honour of the Christchurch club in the trial of strength with the visiting team from Dunedin ; and, judging from their excellent play on Saturday, there is no doubt that, if the visitors should leave the field victoriously on Wednesday, they will have to do so alter a very holly-contested game. Active preparations arc* being made to give the Dunedin jo;,i,i (who arc expected to arrive in Christ- • church this evening) a hearty reception, and, should the weathoy prove favourably for the content between thjj cjufo '’4l} Igtfi fys $ oiw*

Through his lawyer he asks—first, the name of the writer of the correspondence in which the alleged libel appeared ; second, an ample apology for its appearance; and, third, the payment of expenses incurred by him in thus proceeding. Horse Drowned. —A horse belonging to Peter Pasche, fish hawker, was drowned at the Armagh street watering place on Saturday last. The horse was drawing a light cart, and, having got. into a deep hole, was unable to lift the cart out. Some persons then got a rope, fastened it round the unfortunate animal’s neck, and, having attached it to the back of another cart, tried to draw the horse out by the neck up-stream. It resulted in his plunging and getting down, and, before his head could be raised he was drowned.
