The “ Herald’s ” special telegram states that at Plevna the Russians in (heir attack carried the first and second lines of the Turkish position, but were subsequently driven back by a deadly fire from the Turkish infantry. The Turks then advanced, and recaptured all the positions, slaughtering enormous numbers of the Russians. The Russian forces consisted of five divisions of infantry, three brigades of cavalry, and 160 guns. The defeat imperils the Russian position at Tirnova. South of the Balkan mountains the Russians encountered forces under Suliman Bey and Sedif, and were repulsed, losing several guns. AUSTRALIAN. Auckland, August 4. A quantity of wreckage has been found on the bench near North Cape, The circumstance of cases marked “mission” being drifted ashore leads to fears for the safety of schooners Waiwera and Ebenezcr bound for Norfolk Island with stores for the mission. A meeting of clergymen of all denominations to consider the Education Bill lias been held. The meeting readily approved of the Bill and adopted a petition in favor of the religious clause as introduced. Hokitika, August 4. A lire occurred this morning in a house in Revolt street, occupied by a blacksmith named Andrews. Ills wife and two children were severely burnt. One child has since died in the hospital from the effects of burning. The, house was completely destroyed. There was; up insurance on the property. Anguato. less bund;, and the mother is not yet out of danger. The two boys burnt (o death were aired seven and five years. The girls, who were saved, wore aged ten and three years, with an infant four months old. Every stitch of clothing was burnt off all the seven. Delay was occasioned in the opening of the door by the handle being oif. The eldest girl had presence of mind to get under the bed with her sister', and thus escaped the flames for a few minutes. Nelson, August 4. Numerously signed petitions have been sent from here in favor of .Bible reading in schools. Those opposed to it are also about sending a petition praying that subsection 3 of clause 85 be modified by adding the words —“ That at the discretion of every school committee of each district the school may be opened with the reading of the Lord’s Prayer and a portion of scripture, without note or comment, either by the teacher or any other person.” Dunedin, August I. Mr W. D. Meares, of the Victoria Insurance Office, Dunedin, has been appointed manager of the Union Insurance Company. A petition is about; to be circulated re fbc railway question. The recent reduction of the rates on the Dunedin and Port Chalmers railway line still leave the rates 8d per ton higher than those charged by the lighters.
