The “ Guardian ” publishes the following account of our footballers, all of whom, except Dixon, who has to wait till Tuesday, sail on Sunday ; —Allen is a good back, but wants to use more judgment. One of the club’s best drop kicks. Burbury is an energetic forward, but is inclined to waste bis strength when not required. Cargill, W. A., is rather a light forward for the Rugby Union game, but plays his weight. Cargill, A., is a three-quarter back, and fills the place exceedingly well. He should practice drop kicking a little more with his left foot. Dixon, G. (deputy captain), is an energetic player, with plenty of dash and good judgment. Ho can take any place in the field, Fulton, G., is a good forward, especially in the scrimmages, but slow on bis feet. Lambert is a pretty reliable back and a safe kick : collars well. Mills, W., is a headlong forward ; works when required, but should keep his feet under him in the scrimmages. Murray —A forward ; hard and heavy ; difficult to collar or upset; inclined to save himself for good opportunities. McLean, W., would bo very good as a back, being a good drop kick; runs and collars well; some times inclined to get lazy. McKinnon —A good but somewhat unreliable forward ; raises the spirits of bis side by giving tongue when on the bad, but should not overdo it. Maopherson—Very fast on a straight run ; should attend more to backing up, and passing back the ball. Nicholls—A forward, and good allround player, using all his strength up to the last place ; place kicks well. Neville —Plays forward very fast, and sure at collaring. Rolland—Half-back ; smart at picking up and getting away with the ball; wants to practice drop kicking a little more. Rose—Half-back; always conspicuous for his side, very fast on his feet, and hard to stop. Sleigh—An average all-round player. Smith, A. Y.—A hard working forward, although inclined to work a little too much at the sides of the scrimmages. Thomson, J. C. (captain) —A veteran player, a most popular captain, and as a forward could not be replaced. Turton, S.—A good forward ; plenty of pluck, and lasts well. A match for £IOO has been arranged between Logan’s Romance, and Black’s Maggie. Distance —II miles. The latter receives 14 lbs. The municipal contest to-day for the south ward created unusual excitement by reason of a determined effort to keep out Fish, who, however, headed the poll. The “ Star” authoritatively makes the following explanation re charges on the land fund.
