Drapers and Clothiers’ Association. — A special general meeting of the above Association will be held at the Foresters’ Hall to-morrow, at 8 p.m., to consider matters of importance. Sporting. —The entries for thp C.J.C. Handicap and the Canterbury Cup at the forthcoming Metropolitan meeting, were made last night. The number of entries made was as follows :—For the C.J.C, Handicap, 38 ; Canterbury Cup, 2i. S-r. Matthew’s — Kntkbtai n m ent. —An entertainment in connection with this churchwill be held this evening in St. Luke’s school rooom. A very attractive programme appears in our advertising columns. 1.0. C-- —A public entertainment under the auspices of the West Christchurch Lodges vat- given in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom, on Tuesday eyoning, July 31st, J. A. Efford, W C.T. St. Aiirti-ev/’o Lodge, in the chair. Addresses on temperance subjects were delivered by Messrs Shierlaw, Heath, Thomp?on Jacques, and Efford, Song by Mrs S,.braider, a. reading by Mr Lamb, and a recitation by Mr Hill. Mi 1 and Mrs Heath and Mr jleuworlli, of the West Christchurch Templar Choir, tang some very appropriate pieces during the evening,

Entertainment. —An entertainment will be given in the Durham street Wesleyan School to-morrow evening at eight. Lyttelton Fire Brigade Library.— This brigade have purchased some books with a donation received from the Harbor Board for their services at the late fire, and it is to bo hoped that all residents in Lyttelton having copies of works they do not want will Help by presenting them. Any periodicals will also be gladly received. Christchurch Mutual Improvement Society. —At the usual weekly meeting, Held, last night, a very pleasant and instructive evening was spent with the newspapers. Readings upon the subject of or pieces selected from newspapers were given by the President, and Messrs Allison, Atkinson, G-apes, Hall, Groodsall, Tozer, and Willstead, with the usual criticisms thereon by members generally. An essay on “ Milton” will be read by Mr Patterson at the next meeting of the society. Christchurch Shoe and Bootmakers. —A largely attended meeting of the trade was held last evening at the Foresters’ Hall. After the facts of the present lock-out had been described and the whole of the circumstances explained, a resolution was nearly unanimously carried, establishing a Trades Union of the trade in Christchurch. It was understood that the result of the meeting would be telegraphed to the other provinces and colonies.

Building Society, No. 2. —A special general meeting of the members of the Christchurch Land, Building and Investment Society, No 2, was held last evening at the offices, Cathedral square. Mr J. C. Atkinson occupied the chair. The object of the meeting was to pass certain resolutions, notice of which had been given. Mr Hargreaves moved —“ 1. That whenever there shall be the sum of £SOO of the society’s income unappropriated by applications for withdrawal, or for loans approved by the committee, the committee may thereupon direct a ballot to be taken for so many unrealised shares, to be at once withdrawn, as will absorb such funds, and the ballot for the same shall thereupon be taken in the following manner: —2. A card, marked with the number of each unrealised share, shall be put into the ballot box, and after the cards have been shaken, the chairman for the time being shall draw out one by one, as many cards as there are shares ordered to be balloted for, and the shares, the numbers of which correspond to the numbers on the cards so drawn, shall be deemed to have been duly balloted for —provided that all shares so drawn in any ballot shall not again be balloted for until all the other unrealised shares shall have been drawn in like manner. 3. That unless shares so balloted for are withdrawn by cancellation before the next succeeding monthly meeting, there shall be payable in respect of each share so balloted for a sum equal to 10 per cent for one month on the then withdrawal value of same, which shall be payable with the subscriptions at next monthly meeting, and if left in arrear, shall be chargeable with fines at same rate as subscriptions in arrear to a like amount.” Mr Jones seconded the motion, which was agreed to, and the meeting terminated.
