LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
Tuesday, April 10. The adjourned meeting of the Local Board of Health was held this morning at the new ollices of the Drainage Board. Present— Messrs P. Hobbs (chairman),Harman, Duncan, and Boss. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. inspector’s report. The usual weekly report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read, and the various clauses discussed seriatim On the clauses referring to the Antigua street drain being discussed, it was decided, at the suggestion of Mr Harman, that boarding be laid down in the drain to the north of Tuam street, covering the deep holes at that spot. In connection with another clause, a petition was read, signed by forty-one residents at Newtown, complaining of t£e nuisance to the
district caused by Hancock’s soap and caudle works. It was stated, in the petition, that when addressed on the matter, some three years ago, the Road Board, though admitting the nuisance, found they had not sufficient power to act. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Ross, seconded by Mr Harman, “ That the medical officer bo requested to report whether the works in question arc a nuisance, or injurious to health, or both.” The inspector was instructed to consult the health officer, and Board’s solicitor, before taking action as to the removal of a certain nuisance. Mr Duncan expressed disappointment at the sanitary state of a portion of the district not being mentioned in the inspector’s report. Many persons had spoken to him of certain nuisances existing in various quarters, but felt a delicacy in interfering with the duties of the inspector. He did not think Mr Pearce should confine his attention solely to complaints that were brought before him. Mr Harman, though approving of the report so far as it went, said lie agreed with the necessity of the sanitary condition of the district being supervised and reported upon for the information of the Board. The positive necessity of a house to house inspection had always been obvious to him, and now that the City' Council had an Inspector of Nuisances Mr Pearce would now have more time to devote to this work and to the sanitary condition of the district. Though approving of the report as far as it went, he must say he did not think it fairly represented three weeks work. After further remarks from members the subject dropped. NEW TANNERY. A letter was read from Mr W. E. Stamford, saying ho had commenced an establishment for carrying on the tanning and currying business in St. John’s road, Woolston, abutting on the outfall drain. 011*1110 motion of Mr Harman, it was resolved to request the medical officer to inspect Mr Stamford’s premises, with a view of reporting what precautions should be taken to prevent a nuisance injurious to health. URINALS IN THE CITY. In reply to Mr Ross the chairman said the City Council wore taking action in this direction. IN COMMITTEE. The Board went into committee, and on resuming it was decided to extend the present temporary arrangement with Mr Pearce for one month, and consider the whole question at the next meeting of the Board. This concluded the business.
