SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
EAST CHRISTCHURCH. The meeting of the ratepayers of this district Avas held on Monday night, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr G. L. Lee, occupying the chair. The report submitted referred to the erection of the swimming baths, the additions to the gymnasium, the re-modelling Bingsland’s school. The number of children on the books of the school are—Boys, 953: girls, 820 ; total, 1773. Average attendance for quarter ending March 31st—Boys, 064 : girls, 531 ; total, 1195. The report spoke in in high terms of the teaching stall’, especially of Mr Loughrcy, the head master. Abstract of receipts and expenditure from April Ist, 1876, to December 31st, 1876 —Dr —Balance at bank, £174 5s ; Government grant on account of salaries, £2292 13s 4d ; Government grants on account of incidentals, £434 ; Government grant, buildings, sites, &c., £367 11s 8d —£3094 5s ; incidental receipts, £SB 8s 6d; household rate (1875), £4Blos4d; total, £3375 8s lOd. Cr —Salaries, £2239 12s lid; school requisites (stationiry, &c.), £46 4s 8d; cleaning and scavenger, £153 6s sd; fuel and lighting, £126 16s 2d ; minor repairs, £2l 11s ; office expenses and minor incidentals, £126 10s 7d —£471 8s lOd; expenditure on buildings, sites, &c., £384 10s 55—£3095 12s 2d ; balance, December 31st, 1876, £279 16s 8d ; total, £3375 8s lOd. On a show of hands, Messrs Kirk, Mitchell, Rose, and Jamieson were elected members of committee in place of those retiring. COLOMBO ROAD. The annual meeting of the ratepayers of this district was held in the schoolroom on Monday night. The chairman, Mr C. Allison, read the report of the retiring committee. It referred to the addition to the playground, the contemplated building of a new infants’ school, and other improvements. The average attendance Avas now 523, and the number on the roll 773. The committee Avas endeavoring to get their teaching staff strengthened. They gave every credit, hoAvever, to the present staff for their energy and ability. The receipts and expenditure Avcre as follows :—Receipts—To grants for maintenance, £905 17s lid; architect’s commission, £66 6s ; incidental, £200; sale of books, £6 10s ; total, £ll7B 13s lid. Expenditure— By balance brought forward, £4 19s Id ; salaries, £B7B 2s 6d; buildings and repairs, £lO5 8s 7d; incidental, £154 Is 21d, school stationary, £23 12s 4d ; balance in hand, £l2 10s 21; total £ll7B 13s lid. The following gentlemen were elected members of committee in place of those retiring : —Messrs WhitelaAv, Smalley, Cox, Jones, and J. R. AndrcAvs. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. The annual meeting AA'as held last evening in the schoolroom, Mr G. Booth in the chair. The report referred to the action of the late executive in taking the supervision of the Normal school into their own hands, thus virtually cutting off the Northern part of the district. It next congratulated the ratepayers on the completion of the ucav infant school, and announced the purchase of a site for the master’s house on the South Belt, on which a building, costing£6oo, Avas to be erected. After referring to other matters, the report concluded with expressing the committee’s sense of the ability and diligence of the teaching staff. The attendance on February 21st was 767. The balance sheet showed receipts for the year of £2713 0s 6d, and expenses £2673 2s *6d. The retiring members of the Board Avcre re-elected.
