BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting was held at the Board-room, Normal School. Present — Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), Rollcston, Webb, Tosswill, Duncan, and Hall. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATION FROM TAI TAPU. A deputation from Tai Tapu, consisting of three ratepayers, waited upon the Board, the spokesman, a member of the school committee (whose name it was impossible to catch), saying that he personally had canvassed the ratepayers of the district, and four out of five of them were satisfied with the present schoolmaster, and also felt that if his dismissal were persisted in, it would prove a loss to the district. The speaker handed in a list of those ratepayers who were favorable to the schoolmaster being restored, and added that the night Mr Martin was dismissed only three members of the committee were present. Mr Tosswill said that the names on the paper handed in certainly represented, to his knowledge, the strength of the district. After some conversation, the *»; [Chairman said the election of the new school committee woidd take place next week, and as Mr Martin, the late master, was still eligible, the new committee could, if so desired, re-appoint him. The deputation then 'withdrew. IN COMMITTEE. The Board went into committee to consider several matters. After which they resumed. TRANSFER OF RESERVE. A letter from Messrs Slater and Son, solicitors, was read, asking permission to retransfer one of the Board’s reserves from Marks to Tische. This land had previously been transferred from Tische to Marks. The Board consented to the transfer, on the understanding that Marks will have to be jointly liable with the incoming tenant for the rental. DOBURN. The Board decided to sanction the appointment of Mr and Mrs Octavius Field, of Melbourne, as master and mistress, on the production of the necessary certificates. COLOMBO ROAD SCHOOL. The application from the Colombo road committee for an increase of teaching power, was again read, and also a second letter on the same subject. It was mentioned in the latter that during two days of last week the attendance had been 601 and 602 respectively, and the average attendance 500 for the quarter. It was decided to allow the communications to stand over until a report on the wdiolc question ns to classification and standards of teachers, &c., has been received from the examiners and determined upon. GERMAN BAY. The appointment of Mr Martin Sheard was confirmed, subject to his receiving a certificate at the June examination.’ WEEDON. The appointment of Mrs Zwiebruck as assistant mistress was sanctioned at a salary of £SO. SOUTIIBRIDGE. The Board sanctioned the appointment of Master Edgar Andrews as pupil-teacher, the average attendance at the school being at present 136), warranting the additional appointment. WAIMATE. The appointment of Miss O’Keefe as assistant-mistress was sanctioned. NEW BRIGHTON. A letter was read from Mr Salter, chairman of the New Brighton committee, referring to the schoolmaster there being ranger for the district, saying that since the action taken by Mr De Troy against Mr Knight, the latter had refused to allow any member of his family to attend the school while the present master is there ; and also complained as to voters at the last election having been first treated to beer and bread and cheese, and then a list of the desired candidates placed in their hands before going to poll. The Board decided it was desirable that Mr De Troy should not continue to retain the office of ranger. With reference to the other portion of the letter, the Secretary was directed to write that the Board regret they cannot interfere. lebon’s bay. A long letter was read from the district committee, referring to letters and petitions forwarded by Messrs T. 11. Aldridge and D. Wright, to unpleasantness created in the district by the action of the former, and to a misrepresentation of the latter as to the manner in which the last election was conducted. The Board decided they could take no action in the matter.

After transacting further routine business, the Board adjourned.
