CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, April 5

(Before G. L. Alellish, Esq, R.M., and Dr Deamcr, J.P.)

Drunk and Disorderly. —An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined ss. Alargaret Guerin, an old offender, who had received her last chance the previous day, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Patrick Butler, for being drunk, resisting and assaulting the arresting constable, was lined 40s, and Is 6d cab fare. Illegally on Premises. —Hugh Ward, charged with having been found illegally on the premises of Air T. Bruce, Gloucester street, at three o’clock in the morning, was fined 10s.

Sheep Stealing. Alexander Sharp, farmer at Yorktown, Courtenay district, was charged on warrant with having stolen five merino sheep from the run belonging to Mr John Brabazon at West Melton. Mr Joynt appeared for the accused. Inspector If east told the Bench that accused had been arrested the previous day. The police had in their possession five sheep which had been identified by Mr Brabazou as his property. As most of the witness lived some distance from town lie would ask for a remand for eight days. Mr Joynt, in applying for bail, said his client was a freeholder and leaseholder, a portion of his landadjoiningMr Brabazon’s, and possibly the case would assume another aspect when investigated. As there was not much fear of bis leaving the colony, ho (Mr Joynt) would submit that the bail need not be made unusually heavy. The Bench consented to grant bail in two sureties of £IOO each accused in £2OO, and remanded the ease until 14th inst.

Abusive and Threatening Language. —Neil McPhcc appeared on summons to answer the charge of having used abusive and threatening language to his wife, Mary McPhec, Mr Loughnan appeared for the complainant. The parties liavc been living separate for some time past, and, on a previous occasion, defendant had been bound over 1o keep the peace for having assaulted his wife. On the 2nd instant he went down to where she is at present living, and used very insulting language to her, accusing her of improprieties, and also threatened to take her life. Complainant’s landlord called, corroborated the evidence given by Mrs Mcßhe-e, and also as to the correctness of hey life from Ins own observation. In yeply to the Bench, defendant said he had a witness who could prove hi£ statements, but he hadn’t asked him to come to the court. Mr. Loughnan begged that defendant might be bound over for as long a term as possible, as his client was at present living in a continual state yd' fear. II is Worship ordered defendant to find one surety in £lO, and himself in £2O, to keep the peace for twelve months, in default one month’s imprisonment.

LYTTELTON. Thursday, April &. [Before W. Donald, Esq., B.M.] Civil Cases, — ‘VYeav v. Cole, claim £9, for hour sold; Mr Naldcr for plaintiff. The Bench, alter partly hearing the case, adjourned it until Saturday next.

Transfer ok License. —An application for a temporary transfer of the license of the Canterbury Hotel by E. Morgan to Patrick Barry was granted.
