BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. Monday, March 19,
Present —His Worship the Mayor, Ors McDonald, Willcox, Parsons, H. Allwright, P. Cunningham, and W. Holmes. The clerk stated he had received £3B 0s 9d since last meeting. Correspondence was read—From the town clerk, Ohristchurch, stating that the City Council had not yet selected any land ; from Mr Robert Knowles, complaining of nuisance near his premisea in fet David street, The chairman of the works com. mittee said that the works committee had visited the spot and found the nuisance arose from the mouth of the St David street eewer ; if the Council were in funds they thould recommend that another one and a half chain should be added to the sewer. He should '-hould move that the work be done. This was agreed to. A report of the estates committee was read, in reference to laid selection. The report was received and adopted. The further cor sideration of the matter was left to the estates committee with power to act. From John Thompson, clerk of works, re progress of works at Grubb's gully culvert, appeiding voucher for progress payment. The borough engineer reported that regarding the proposed reservoirs they would have to be placed at the upper end of Canterbury and Oxford streets, where Exeter street crossed them. These tanks would be expensive as being partially in the roadway they would have to be made to bear any weight, and the cost of each would be about £1250, so he would only recommend the formation of one for the present. The work ain the valley would not be completed for a month, as several new castings had to be made. The Government engineer had promised to give him notice when the pipes in the valley would be tested, so that he might be present. The engineer was instructed to obtain the necessary castings from Ohristchurch for the completion of the water supply worka, and to teat the ground at junction of Canterbury and Exeter streets re excavation for reservoir. Accounts were passed amounting to £382 Is 7d. It was resolved—- " That fourteen days' notice of withdrawal of £SOO from New Zealand Loan and Investment Association be given." The reports of the chairman of the fiusnea committee in accordance with clause 109 of Municipal Corporations Act was read. It wae as follows :—" Estimate, of expenditure of the Lyttelton Borough Council foe year ending 31st March, 1878—General labor, £1000"; carting, £2OO ; asphaite. £220; metal, £260 ; drainage, £550 : fire prevention, £IOO ; plant and material, £3OO ; lighting, £230 ; salaries and office, .£SOO ; incidental expenses, £100; advertising, £1(10; total, £3550. Notice—That it is the intention of the Borough Council to strike a rate of one shilling in the £ upon the value of the rateable property of the borough for the year ending March 31st, 1878; such rate to be and is payable at the office of the borough on the 30th April, 1877." The report was received and adopted. The following notice of motion was given by Cr Willcox :—" That it would be advisable for the Lyttelton Borough Council if proper terms can be obtained to acquire the plant and works with whole interest in the Lyttelton Gas, Coal and Coke Company ; pending the above resolution being carried, that the Gas Company be asked if they will enter into negotiations on the subject." The Council then adjourned.
