The Board held a meeting at the Normal School at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs J, Inglis (chairman), W. Montgomery, A, Duncan, W. Rolleston, fl, R. Webb. TAI TAPU. A deputation from the school committee waited on the Board to explain the reason of their dismissing the master and assistantmistress. After hearing the statement of the deputation, the Board decided to approve of the removal of the master and the mistress. BET DENS, The following return of the number of scholars attending the schools of the province, &c, was read:—Number of common schools 117, number of infant schools included in the above total 6, number of teachers—male 171, female 218, total 389; highest number of scholars on the books during the December quarter—boys 7512, girls 6900, total 14,412; average daily attendance during the quarter —boys 5326, girls 4519, total 9845 ; ages of the pupils under five years—male 19, female 167, total 358 ; five and under ten—male 4586, female 4144, total 8730 ; ten and under fifteen—male 2640, female 2491, total 5131 ; fifteen and upwards—male 97, female 96, total 193. Numbers receiving instruction in various branches of education, viz, Beading malea 7438, female 6827, t0ta1}14,265 ; arithmetic—male 6752, females 6285, total 13,037 ; grammarmale 3463, female 3101, total 6564 ; mueic male 3560, female 3219, total 6779 ; writing -male 6788, female 6550, total 13,338; geography—male 3519, female 3117, total 6636 ; history—male 2906, female 2656, total 5557 ; other subjects—male 2503, female 2771, total 6274. OPAWA. An application was received from the committee, asking for a grant fp.ir certain works, which wao granted LOBUPN, A letter was recced fiom the committee notifying that Mr h«ward had resigned the charge of the school. WEEDON, A letter was read from the committee, pointing out that their teacher had failed .o pass the examination, and asking that the Board would sanction the appointment of an other. It was decided to sanction, the committee advertising for another master. EAST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was road from the committee, stating that they had no funds to put ud the fence at the baths, as recommended by the Board. KAIAPOJ. A letter was read irom the committee aakiag that certain repairs should be exo--1 ';uted, which were sanctioned oy the Board. INCIDENTAL EXPENSES. A number of payments to various schools, on account of incidental expenses, were passed,

HOLIDAYS, On the recomniei'datioa of Mr Howard the Board fixod the Bastsr holidays from 29ch March to April 9th. BINGSLAND. The chairman brought under the notice of the Board the fact that tickets had bern distributed to the children of the school, with the cognizance of the taacher, to admit them to the Great Hibernica. He thought that teachers should not be made mediums for advertising such exhibitions. The Board decided that a letter should be written to the East Ohristchurch committee, pointing out that it would be advisable that the committee should see that their authority was first obtained to such a proceeding. CLERK OF WORKS. Mr Rutland was appointed temporarily as clerk of works to the Board at £3 12s per week, until permanent arrangements are made. The Board then adjourned.
