ROAD BOARDS.
AVON. This Board met on the i9th inst; present all the members except Mr Strouts. The surveyor's report was read and considered. It was resolved to commence the bridge over the Avon at once, the labour gang to be under the superintendence of the foreman. Resolved that Stapleton's road be attended to; resolved that the foreman r3port at next meeting re Taaffe's road, and upon drain in Springfield road, near Mr Abbott's property; resolved that tenders be called for shingling Farquhar's road, also for forming and shingling road on section 6, returnable on Monday next; resolved that the clerk be iDßtrncted to write to Mr Vaughan's solicitor, informing him that there ia no money due ; resolved that Moor and Pearson ba communicated with with regard to shiugle contract to see if material cannot bo obtained from Grcongrove'a pit, the Board offering an of lo per yard; resolved thai the clerk be instructed tq write to Mr Jameson, asking him if he would supply Mr Colo with map; resolved that another tamp be added on the Papanav road. Tenders were received for forming Phillpott's road, and that of McGiath accepted. Accounts to the amount o? £356 ISa 3d were paused, and ordered xo be paid. The Board then adjourned. riEATHOOTE. The Board met at 2 o'clock p.m. on Thursday, 15th iostant, Present—Messrs F. Joues (c lairmnu pro torn), P. Kerr, William Altwood, and William Langdown. Messrs Thomas Ross and W, M. Lester waited on the Board as a deputation from the inhabitants in the neighborhood of Hargcod's road north, requesting the Board to form that section ol ihe road. They were informed that the i*os.rd then had this road under considers ion, 'The Rev G. Oholnioudeley had a:t interview with the. Board relative to forming --I footpath at Opawa from the bridge towaid3 ■he parsonage. He waa informed that if the res:dents of Opawa will collect and pay in une-half of the cost the Board will take the woik iu hand. The following correspondence was read and considerrd. From rate«
payers resident in the district in Junction io«.d, r« questing the Board toforn 3 ;i! road, and eff ring £!5 towards cost <r same: or if the Board considers that amount it)sufficient, to levy a special rate on the locality. The Board resolved to ascertain the cost of the work by calling for tenders preparatory to levying a special rate. From Mr J. A. Graham, offering to renew his contract for keeping the Sumner and Lyttelton road in repair for the ensuing twelve months for £3O. Resolved, that Mr Graham's offer be accepted. From Mr J. 8. Clarke, requesting permission to remove road scrapings near h's house in Matheson's road. Permission granted. From Matheson's Agency, as agents for Miss Skillicoru, respecting the watercourse, &c, near her residence. To bo informed that the Board will have drain pipes placed across St Martin's road, near north-east oorner of her land, and otherwise do what they consider equitable in the matter. The clerk was instructed to write to Mr McGregor in reference to contribution towards cost of forming his road ; also, to Messrs Harrild, Baxter, and others, resident in Stanmore road south, and inform them that the Board is willing to form their roadway and footpath on condition that they collect and pay in £l2 towards the cost of same, and dedicate the road to the Board ; the road to be not Icbs than half a chain wide ; also, to the Avon Road Beard re Stanmore road bridge ; also, to Board of Health r» dcaits at Avonvle,which have been complained of ; also, to the Government requesting them to clean ou'j the railway drains and culverts at Opawa and Heathcote Valley ; also, to the Drainage Board, requesting them to deepen the drains leading from the outfall drain to Oashti street east and Stanmore road, to relieve these localities of stagnant water now lying in the ditches. The clerk was instructed io continue takiug out summonses against all defaulting ratepayers for both general and special rates. It waß resolved to have a eurvey made of the Avon River road, adjoining E ist Town belt; also resolved—" That the Board is willing to over the now road by Mr Richardson's house, Opawa, leading from the Opawa road to ths Railway station, on condition that it be formed and dedicated." Resolved—- " That tenders be called for shingling the road leading to New Brightoa, from Kerr's comer to the new bridge ; also, for quarrying and breaking 250 yards metal at Rocky Point, Hill's road ; also, for forming and claying Hargood's road north ; also, for forming Junction road, Wooleton." Tenders were accepted for forming Dyer's road ; for forming Bamford's road ; for forming River Heathcoto road from Ohristchurch Quay to Opawa railway station ; for breaking metal in tioad Board yard, &c ; and for a supply of broken metal for the Gasworks road, The Board then adjourned.
